BPA and water bottles

I got an email today from CPA mom, who was one of the winners in my Filter For Good water bottle contest. It seems these great water bottles we got contain the controversial BPA plastic. What irony we have here! The companies encourage us to use reusable water bottles to help preserve the environment all while they are using chemicals that will not preserve us!
Anyway, I have contacted the company that sent the water bottles and I am waiting to hear back on whether or not they will replace them for us. Stay tuned…
Edited to add: the company is sending replacement bottles! Nalgene has new Filter For Good bottles that are made of plastic that does not contain BPA. THANK YOU!
Meanwhile, I decided to check my other bottles, including my most recent purchase. I bought the new Camelbak Better Bottle from Title 9 Sports and I absolutely LOVE it! It has a bite valve that won’t spill even when it is left open. The valve folds flush to the bottle cap so it stays clean when I am not using it. I carry it with me everywhere and even my toddler loves to use it.
I was crushed when I turned it over to find the number 7 on the bottom, indicating it is made with Bisphenol A (BPA), an estrogen-like chemical that can leach into your drink. It may be linked to health problems, including breast cancer and early puberty. Canada is considering banning the use of it altogether.
I love this bottle, but not that much! I am pleased to read on Camelbak’s website that starting 5/1/08 all of their bottles will be BPA-free. (um, can you send me a replacement, pretty please?)
I am sad to report that pretty much all of my water bottles are going into the trash, which is definitely NOT environmentally friendly. If you haven’t already done so, please check your water and baby bottles today.
Do you have a favorite water/sports bottle that is safe and easy to use?

At this point, the only safe ones I can find are my kids’ sippy cups.

This is a timely post. Yesterday I had a discussion about BPA in plastics. We tend to reuse water bottles, but that’s most likely not the best in the long-run. I need to do some research on where I can buy non-BPA water bottles. Do you know where I can buy them?

Susan–I believe many of the brand name companies are making BPA free bottles now that the reports have been released. Another option is the Kleen Kanteen or Sigg bottles, which are stainless steel and non-leaching.
alyssa–what sippy cups are you using? I have a Foogoo for my son, but most of the time he wants the plastic Diego cups that are probably the worst of them all.
Jacqueline-I agree! it is very sad that we now have to be scared about what are cups/bottles are made of. Unfortunately, I think this might be just the beginnning….

Long time reader, first time writing. My family (husband and 2 kids (8 &5) switched to the Sigg botles last year. We like them. Easy to use, they have a sports top, but I like the screw on. Once you get use to it, it’s just fine.

My wife and I are looking for an under-the-counter water filter. In the meantime, we have been buying bottled water manufactured by Wal Mart, since it is reverse osmosis.
Do you know if these particular plastic bottles contain the naughty BPA plastic?

Great post. I’m not too educated on the whole BPA plastics, so I learned much from this. For my workouts, I just use a Whole Foods 365 Electolyte Enhanced Water bottle over and over til the plastic feels like it’s about to bust. I just refill at home. Are those bottles not good? I looked underneath and it had a number 2.

here are some articles that I found that address the issue. From what I understand, bottles that have the number 7 on the bottom are the suspicious ones. Camelbak’s new BPA free bottles are going to specifically say “BPA free” so be on the lookout for those.

Be sure to check recycling numbers on the bottoms of those cups before you toss them… some of them might be recyclable instead of going straight into landfill…

This is also my favorite water bottle. I didn’t know it had BPA. I have had it for a while so I am sure it does. I am glad to hear that Camelback is making ones without BPA so I can get a new one.

Not sure whether Neil and Amy are still in. I enjoyed watching them last time I tuned in — a good team! It is terrific to see how children can be a wonderful incentive to live healthy lives. Kudos to them and to you, workoutmommy!
