Thankful for 13.1 miles of road

    By workoutmommy | April 18, 2008

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my rss feed. Thanks for visiting!

This weekend I will be running in a half marathon with some great friends and one pregnant woman who hopefully will not pass me!

While part of me is disappointed that I am not running as fast as I did before having children, most of me is just happy to be running again.

(Note to self: so what if you still have a little junk left in your trunk? You can run 13.1 miles and that is not something to shake a stick at!)

Since running is mostly a mental game, I came up with a list of things I will think about during all of those miles. I figure if I can keep my mind occupied with positive thoughts then I won’t even have time to think anything negative.

There is no room in my head for: “I can’t”

because all I am going to hear is “I can. and I will!”

    So here is my list:

Mile 1: Gorgeous spring weather. The race starts way too early in the morning, but I will be thankful that it is not raining and/or windy.

Mile 2: The race is in my college hometown. The course will take me past some of my favorite college hangouts, so my mind can drift back to the days of sleeping until noon. (and hangovers, beer, and greasy pizza at 4am!)

Mile 3: Hills. As hard as they are, they always make my glutes have a party. Anything that can get my glutes in shape deserves to be celebrated.

Mile 4: I will have a few hours off from being a mommy and get to enjoy the sound of just my own feet pounding the pavement.

Mile 5: Running in my outfit from Oiselle, because yes, I love it that much!

Mile 6: The volunteers who spend their day giving out water to sweaty runners like myself.

Mile 7: My two little boys, who believe I am the fastest mommy on the block.

Mile 8: The race is more than halfway done, I am in the homestretch!

Mile 9: Post race refreshments, because I will be eating them all!

Mile 10: All my new blogging friends and readers. I can’t quit now because you will be checking back to see how I have done!

Mile 11: My family will be at the finish line and will make me feel like the proudest mommy around.

Mile 12: Ice cream. I am totally getting ice cream after this.

Mile 13: I am grateful that I am healthy enough to be able to run 13.1 miles.

Mile 13.1: My awesome hubby who took kid duty during my training runs (and THANK GOD this thing is almost over!)

That is what I will be doing this weekend gang.

How about you? What is on your activity calendar?
    No excuses!

Ice Cram at mile 12? That is a great thought. I do not know if oyu have read the article at Zen Habits but Leo there ran a marathon a couple of weeks ago and wrote a lot about how he prepared for the day itself to make it go more somootly.

I love the idea of these thoughts as you go through the run.

Great job! You should be very proud of yourself! I’ve always wanted to run, but due to a health concern with my feet, never could do more than a couple miles. (I’m a bike rider instead!) Congrats!
