Normally one celebrates love, happiness and chocolate today.
Personally I think we should just celebrate our heart and all that it does for us!
Our hearts are responsible for pumping about 2 gallons (5 liters) of blood that is circulated over and over through the body. The blood moves from the heart, into arteries, capillaries, and veins before returning to the heart. The entire cycle takes about 60 seconds, during which time the blood carries oxygen and nutrients to all the cells in the body.
Sounds like your heart deserves a day of celebration, doesn’t it?
Here are a few easy ways you can take care of your ticker. We only get one, so let’s treat it right!
- Exercise: Your heart is a muscle. If you want it to be strong, you need to exercise it. Get moving!
- Don’t smoke: you need to quit. You know this, so what steps are you taking to help yourself quit? Google “stop smoking” and you will find a ton of resources for quitting.
- Eat a healthy diet: eat more fresh fruit, veggies, and lean protein. Say no to junk food! It really is as simple as that.
- Maintain a healthy weight: determine your BMI and measurements here. Are you in the healthy range? If not, it is time to cut back and shed some weight.
- Reduce your stress: stress causes your body to release a hormone (adrenaline) that causes your heart rate to speed up and your blood pressure to rise. If your body is chronically stressed, your heart will constantly be working overtime. Find ways to cut stress out of your life and enjoy time to relax. Yoga has always helped reduce my stress levels, try out a class near you.
So in honor of Valentine’s Day, please take the time to take care of your most important valentine, your heart.
Go move your muscles and enjoy your energy. No excuses!
