I subscribe to a lot of fitness related magazines each month. Fitness, Shape, Women’s Health, Oxygen just to name a few. I am excited when the latest issue arrives in the mail and usually read it as soon as I can. I enjoy reading the workouts and the tips on how to incorporate more fitness in your day. I even like to read the healthy recipes, although I know I will never be capable of making anything featured!
What I don’t love is the overkill of advertisements for weight loss pills, metabolism boosters, or cellulite reducing creams. The same magazine that has an article about how there is no magic pill for weight loss will have an advertisement on the opposite page for something like Metabolife or Lipo-6 (which claims it is a fat loss breakthrough in a capsule!)
I understand they have to sell ad space to keep in business but isn’t that sending conflicting signals?
The FTC estimates that Americans spend a billion dollars a year on diet supplements. A billion dollars!? Obviously a lot of people believe these products will help them become slimmer and melt away cellulite. Aside from the health concerns of these pills (which is another blog post entirely), they just do not work! If they did, wouldn’t the richest people in the world be super slim and cellulite free (think Oprah here)?
Please do not waste your money on magic fat burners, metabolism boosters, cellulite creams or anything that promises you will lose weight or inches overnight. The only thing that will be slimmer is your wallet.
Save your money and just follow these three steps: move more, eat less, and strength train. The answer isn’t in a cream or pill—it comes from hard work and discipline.

Hey Lisa,
I couldn’t agree more with you. Those fitness magazines drive me crazy. Men’s health magazine is the worst for their ads contradicting their articles.
I have read a lot of the plans that talk about the dangers of pills and on the opposite side of the page was a ad for hydroxicut or some other useless pill.
It’s hard to believe that people spend that much money on that garbage. I guess hype sells and common sense doesn’t.
