Dogs are SO MUCH EASIER than children! Why didn’t anyone warn me that kids get harder as they get older? No matter what life hands you, you still have to move your body.
I had 4 boys in just under 6 years. When they were little, it was a constant stream of feeding, diaper changing, playing, napping, bathing, cleaning, feeding, etc. I was exhausted and I thought it would never end. I found it hard to stay in shape, but I made it work for the most part. I also was fortunate to not have to work and I was married.
Now? Good gravy. The kids are older and it’s still a constant stream of feeding and cleaning but now includes taxi service to endless sports, homework (6th grade math is ridiculously hard!), being a referee, laundry, and going to the grocery store because they never stop eating. My children are slobs and have to be forced to bathe. (Pre-teen boys smell horrible. Why?) I think I’d like those early years back please! I also now work outside the home and the husband is out of the picture. To say I’m overwhelmed, is an understatement. But again, I still have to move my body.
So I don’t really get it when people tell me they don’t have time to exercise. Even if you only find 10/15 minutes, you still have time. Something is better than nothing!
While I love a good workout program, sometimes there just is not enough time or even motivation to do so. I’d love to go to the gym everyday for 90min-2 hours, but I just cannot do that anymore. So I modify and do more things at home or cut the time down. Even 30 minutes at the gym is better than zero minutes. No matter where you are in life, you still have to move your body.
Don’t give up and say you cannot do it, just find another way that works for YOU.
Maybe that means a long walk in the morning before work.
Find a used exercise bike on craigslist and ride it at night when your kids are getting ready for bed.
Do squats in your kitchen while making dinner.
Find some cheap free weights and find an easy to follow full body program. I recently came across HASFit and think it’s great. It’s a free app that has workouts you can follow. I also like Beachbody OnDemand, but that has a cost. If it’s something you will use, then maybe it’s worth spending the money on?
Quick workouts are key. You need this for your physical health as much as your mental health. I know I feel SO much better after I get in a workout and I think you will too. Follow cpoe and healthtrends for more info on moving your body and other related articles.
However you can get it done, you still have to move your body!
Now, can someone please tell me when this parenting gig gets easier?
