October and breast cancer awareness

by workoutmommy on October 2, 2011

Another month, another chance to refresh your goals.  How do yours look?

October is also breast cancer awareness month, although I think there should be an emphasis on breast cancer awareness all year long. (why only a month?)

I don’t think there is anyone out there that has not been directly or indirectly affected by breast cancer.

I do think everyone should go and read this post by Susan.   She has such a way with words and helping to put things into perspective.   She has guest posted here before and I just have so much love and admiration for her.   She is truly an inspiration.

Speaking of inspiration,   I recently came across these tshirts from ChewyLou designs.   ChewyLou was founded by Alyssa, who is a mom, yoga teacher to pro-athletes, and recent founder of the non-profit Chemo Companions.    She created “blessing” acronyms that struck a chord in her life.

One of the ones that spoke to me was her “LIVE” tshirt.

Alyssa created this shirt in honor of her mother who was battling breast cancer at the time.   I received one of these shirts and not only is it super comfy, but it is such a fantastic reminder to me all day long.    There are times in my day when I’m just at the edge of my rope with my lovely little boys and then I look at myself in the mirror and I’m reminded to just LIVE. (love, imagine, value, embrace)

Please go and check out all the inspiration designs that ChewyLou has to offer.   The shirts are screen printed by adults with special needs and a portion of the profits are donated to various charities including Komen, Lupus Foundation, Faces of Hope and Planting Peace.

I’m very thankful that Alyssa has offered to give away a LIVE tee shirt to THREE lucky readers in honor of breast cancer awareness month!

Please leave a comment below if you know someone who has been affected by breast cancer and you will be entered to win.   Winners will be chosen at random on Friday, October 7th, 2011.   Contest is open to US addresses only.

My high school teacher had breast cancer. She made sure to teach us all about how to care about someone who was sick in any way even if we could help make them feel physically better.

My grandmother died 15 years ago with this Terrible Breast cancer! I just remember how evrybody in my family suffer about this. We couldn’t help too much. Today my sisters and I are very councious about it. Check up regularly open my mind that it could happen to me one day.
As a mom I realize how important is to help and support organization like that!!! I”ll hope back on time people could be more serious about it.prevention!!

In 1999, I was working at a salon and a woman came in wanting all her hair cut off. She had been diagnosed with breast cancer and was beginning to loose her hair after her chemo treatments. I cried as I cut all her hair off, I had lost my 11 year old sister to cancer in 1996. This woman and I and soon discovered that her mother and my grandmother bowled together and were great friends. She has survived her breast cancer! She has been an inspiration to me.

Five and a half years ago, one of my aunts was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer. The doctors gave her 3-5 years to live; and she has exceeded that to five and a half, and who knows how much longer, only God. She has been able to see two of her children marry and one welcome her first grandchild. She is a strong woman and does not complain about her circumstances. She is such an example to me!

Several of my good friends from highschool have lost their moms. My husband’s former boss and good friend was treated a while ago and has just been diagnosed with a relapse. She has two young kids ….

My mom …who has fought and beat it 3 times…my aunt who fought but died…and my mother-in-law who I never got to meet.

My best friend’s mother and grandmother, who are better than family to me; thankfully they fought it and are doing wonderful….

My husband’s grandmother beat it after having a double mastectomy. My sister has found lumps before, and while they’ve all been benign (thankgoodness), it just emphasizes the importance of monthly self exams.

I love that shirt and acronym. LIVE hummmm that fits perfectly with the presence i’ve been working on . Live in the moment. Value the moment. Embrace the moment. The imagine part comes easy I’m an artist and that’s my favorite thing to do.
