Call me crazy

by workoutmommy on March 15, 2011

Some may call this crazy, but I consider it a sanity saver!

I signed my husband up to meet with a personal trainer two times per week because he needs to get healthy.  Unfortunately his training time ends just as the kettlebell class is starting, so it’s not possible for me to attend class unless we do the ‘kid swap’.   This means I pack up all 3 screaming kids in the car and drive to meet him in the parking lot.   He drives kids back home while I get to go to class!   There are days when this seems like a huge chore  (because getting 3 small kids in the car at dinner time is like trying to herd angry, wet, cats!) but as soon as I get there and walk away from that car I feel a HUGE sense of relief!

Yes, the class is tough, but it helps me get rid of most of the stress from my day.    When I get back home I am a happier mommy and ready to tackle the rest of the crazy night.   It’s a win-win situation in our house!

Now, it’s your turn!  What crazy things have you done to ensure you get your workout done?

Crazy, but good for both of you! My youngest son (17 months) was up during the night for a couple of hours (no idea why). This morning my husband suggested I take a 20-minute nap during the kids’ afternoon naptime. My response – “No way, I need to get my exercise in!” I know that if I sleep, it would be much longer than 20 minutes, and I feel so much better after exercising! :)

@melissa: my hubby tells me the same thing! I agree with you–a 20 minute workout is much more invigorating than a 20 minute nap! :)

Just make sure your husband gets in the car with the kids before you walk away. :-)

When I was home with my daughter, I had an areobics class (it was the eraly 90s!) that had me walking out the door as soon as my husband walked in.

Is your husband liking the trainer?

@Coco: sometimes I think he is tempted to jump in a different car! :) He hates exercising in general, but says that he can tell he is stronger and always feels better after he is done. He will never workout by choice—so a trainer is the best (only?) option for him!

sometimes for the sake of sanity, we must go out of our way to heal ourselves. And that is a good thing you are doing for yourself. Much luck and wishes for success for your hubby.

I’ve done the usual early morning and late night workouts to fit them in, and sometimes I wear workout clothes to school (I’m a dental student) so that I can make it to my bootcamp class or can workout before I go home. I get some funny looks (I wore legwarmers over my capris yesterday), but it’s worth it.

When our daughter was little I was the queen of the child swap!!! My husband would meet us in the parking lot of the gym! You are right…I felt bad sticking him with a car housing a screaming baby but the feeling once I started to sweat was priceless! Now my crazy thing to get in a workout is that I wake up at 4:15 to make it to the gym before work. No one is up to tell me to stay home!!

I hear ya on the early workout bit….Recently started doing the Insanity workout at 5am so I could get it in before work and kids up (haha sometimes they end up coming down to “watch” and request their vitamin juice, and a snack and…….) but I definately feel better the rest of the day knowing I am done with for the day! Now just to keep up with the momentum! I was doing other short workouts and just wasn’t feeling like I was seeing results so finally feel like my 40 minute workout is getting me somewhere!

I get up and get my 4 year old and 18 month old ready. My 4 year old usually doesn’t want to go to preschool, so there’s a lot of convincing to get him out the door. Once he’s dropped off I drive about 10 miles to the gym then bring my daughter in along with her huge Elmo chair (he seems to make her happier during my workouts). All of this so I can get in my 30-45 minutes of exercise at the gym! Some days I wonder if it’s worth all the trouble but I know in the long run it is.

I used to feel guilty about handing my screaming kids over to my husband, but then I realized, hey, he’s their parent, too. If I’m dealing with baby drama all day, he can handle it for an hour or two, lol!
Now my kids are in elementary school all day, which gives me more time. (And the fact that I teach fitness classes helps, as well!)

Wow, good for you! Sometimes it’s hard for me to get in a workout with one child, staying at home! Mad props!

Funny you should ask… on the way home from my sisters this last weekend I led my kids through a bootcamp class in the middle of the terminal. Our flight got delayed and I figured it was as good a way as any to get their wiggles out!

I am also guilty of the late night workouts. After we get the kids to bed I really want to crash but I know I’ll feel better with a good workout.

One time, I really needed to get in my workout. The baby woke up so I carried her up and down the steps for 30 minutes. She was drenched in sweat but I got a good workout in ;)
