Essentials for your home gym

by workoutmommy on January 19, 2011

Last year, I got rid of my treadmill and my spin bike and got off the endurance cardio wagon. That had a time and place in my life, like when I had no kids and I could ride my bike or run for hours on end!

These days I’m all about the powerful workout that delivers more bang for my buck.

I can get a full body, and cardio based, workout with just these pieces of equipment:

1. TRX*:

this was a new one for me and initially I was skeptical.  Boy was I wrong!  Go try this sucker out and come back and tell me you don’t feel challenged in every muscle in your body!  TRX now has something new called “TRX TV” where they will give you workouts and stuff to do. One of the best parts about the TRX is that it comes in this cute little bag and is completely portable. Traveling for work or going on vacation? No excuses with this one gang, pack it in your bag!

Introducing TRX TV. Turn on. Tune in. Work out. Tune in now.

2. Kettlebells:

I have professed my love for these over and over. You don’t need a DVD to workout with these, although sometimes it is nice to not have to do the “thinking”.  (highly recommend Lauren Brooks’ videos!)

These days, I pair a few moves while alternating doing stair runs. In just 30 minutes, I am drenched, exhausted, and happy. No more 2 hour long runs for this body. My kettlebell workout allows me to get in a workout AND a shower!! (yes, that is a luxury for me these days!)

Again I have to reiterate how important your form is when working out with kettlebells. (Translation: do NOT go by Jillian Michaels DVD!) Make sure to get instruction from a certified instructor who can show you the basics. After that, you should be good to go on your own. (or jump in on some group classes!)

GoFit makes excellent kettlebells and they are on sale at Target this week! :)

3. Foam roller: You know all of those muscles that work so hard for you? They are tight, sore, and knotted. You could spring for a $75 massage or you could buy a $20 Foam Roller and just massage your muscles yourself! I will warn you—the first few times you do this, it will not be pleasant. This just means you need to do it more though!

So those are my home workout essentials. What are yours?

Our workout style and lists are SO SIMILAR. LOVE IT. I’d just sub out the TRX for a pull up bar or a heavy rope but probably the pull up bar.

I got a TRX for Christmas!!! :) And I LOVE my kettlebells (and even have Lauren’s DVDs…all 3)….but my kids are old enough now, I can run my heart out and they’re fine, so those are my 3. Oh, I use my pullup bar (the one from P90X) to attach my TRX to. ;)

BTW, I TOTALLY hear you on the fact that getting a workout AND a shower is a luxury!
If I have a dream piece of equipment, it’s a Pilates reformer. Of course, keeping the kids off of it would be a nightmare, lol!

We have the foam roller in common. I have a treadmill, ellipical, full set of free weights, exercise bands, and lots of DVDs (that I use) and VHS tapes (collecting dust).

My own body weight – it’s amazing how much you can challenge yourself with squats, lunges, planks, push-ups etc. It doesn’t need to be fancy – it just needs to be done!

I detested the foam roller when I first tried it, but you’re totally right. I grew to love that sucker.
