As part of Subway’s Commit To Fit challenge I was given the opportunity to interview Jared, also known as “The Subway Guy”.
First, I just have to say he is such a nice and genuine person. I’m sure you know his story by now, so I won’t re-tell it. What stood out most is that he a regular person just like me. He struggles with his weight every single day and is just doing the best that he can.
Jared is challenging himself this year by running the NYC marathon on November 7th and guess what? Up until this year, he had never RUN A MILE. Never! So for those of you out there who think you cannot do it (either a mile or a marathon) please know that YES, you can. You can do anything you put your mind to. His advice for those of you who are doubting yourself?
- Start slow
- Pace yourself
- and most importantly, do it for fun. Don’t worry about your time or distance, just get out there and run and have fun!
Jared admits he was worried about how marathon training might impact his body given the fact that he used to weigh 400 lbs. His knees might suffer, his joints, etc. He sought out help from a qualified trainer and came up with a slow training plan to minimize the stress on his body. This year he has run a 5k, 10k, and a 1/2 marathon.
Although he is excited about the NYC marathon, he told us this will most likely be his one and only. He is going to cross it off his “bucket list” and focus more on the shorter distances. He did say however that he plans to continue running as part as his fitness routine. :)
I also asked Jared what his favorite sub is and he told me that he switches between the Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki and the Subway Club. And sometimes, he splurges and goes for the meatball sub because healthy living is all about moderation and balance!
Sending out good luck and good weather vibes to Jared for his run next weekend! I ran NYC in 2003 and it was my favorite!

My absolutely favorite Subway sandwich is the bar-b-que chicken with lettuce, tomatoes, black olives, and pickles….of course on whole wheat! YUM, now I need to log off and go grab a Sub!

turkey with spinach, tomatoes, cucumbers, pickles and mustard on 9 grain wheat.
the italian BMT is SUPER good for a splurge day!
I would get an BMT- or a veggie. Love them both. More and more people are running marathons. I can’t seem to get myself to even run a mile anymore. My husband just ran a 100k and took first place. The race was amazing. Good luck to everyone who is running the NYC marathon.
I’m so excited to hear about his experience. Isn’t he running it w/ Shay from Season 8 or 9? Anyhoo, I’ll be training for my first marathon soon and like Jared, it will probably be my only one – bucket list thing too.
My fave is the veggie delight from Subway. Before going veg, I was a cold cut trio addict!

on different days, of course.
I’m a vegetarian and I love their veggie delight with honey mustard!
The black forest ham sub is delicious, as is the vegetarian sub on flatbread. On my bad days I like the cold cut combo.
I love the Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki with let, tom, onion, bp, and the sauce!

I love their turkey on wheat with ALL of the vegetables. Everything is so fresh there!
I am a “runner” myself, although I’ve been running for a year and haven’t been able to do more than 5 miles. A 1/2 marathon is on my bucket list (I don’t aspire to a full because I just don’t think I have the stamina), and it might take me a LONG time to get there, but that’s alright — fitness doesn’t have a timeline.
As long as he trains smart and doesn’t over do it he will probably be fine. A little strength training and foam rolling along the way would be beneficial as well. But I have to say, respectfully, that Subway is a horrible solution for fast food. It’s gross. Have you looked at the ingredients in the “meat”? Or the bread? Their bread is made with high fructose corn syrup. The meat is totally processed. You might lose weight on a Subway diet but you’re certainly doing little for your health. I don’t go near Subway.
