Caffeine addiction

by workoutmommy on August 3, 2010

Diet Pepsi, I am done with you!  After posting our break up, I was able to go cold turkey for 14 days.  The caffeine headaches were HORRIBLE the first 3 days but after that, it wasn’t so bad.

But then, I fell off the wagon.  I love the taste of that chemical cocktail, especially when I am eating certain foods. Then I read a Facebook post by  NoFizz Charlotte that helped get me back on the wagon:

A study by the Ramazzini Foundation of Oncology has shown that aspartame, which is prevalent in diet sodas, caused an increased incidence of cancer and brain tumors in lab animals. To reach the same dangerous dose levels, a 140-pound person must drink merely three cans of diet soda per day.

I was drinking at least 4 cans a day. So I’m done. Forever. Gone.

Every now and then though, I need a caffeine kick.   Which is why I am ecstatic to have discovered caffeinated water!  I had no idea that even existed until Skinny Sushi clued me in.  (thank you!)

Water Joe graciously sent me a sample of their water and it works!  Each bottle has as much caffeine as an 8 oz. cup of coffee, 20 oz bottle of diet soda, or 8 oz. energy drink.   There are no calories, added sweeteners, chemicals or crap.  It’s just plain water.  Cold, delicious, and with just enough punch to get me through my day!

So farewell Diet Pepsi. You have been replaced!

Congrats on your breakup. It’s the healthy decision. Coffee and tea are other options, if you tire of Water Joe. Ito En/Teas Tea makes unsweetened green teas (you’ll get antioxidants too). And Toddy is the easiest ice coffee contraption in the world…but perhaps you don’t like tea or coffee, only read this post. In any event, well done soda is worth giving up!

YAY! I’m so glad the water worked for you! It’s so much better for you than the soda, and now we don’t have to worry about you developing a Pepsi tumor. :)

I have broken up with diet soda too. I do love soda, but not more than my health anymore. Thanks for the post, I’ve never heard of caffeinated water! Now I must try it!!

I don’t care about the caffeine in diet soda (died AW is my fave)… it’s the carbonation mixed with a sweet taste to wake me up and scratch my throat. The closest I’ve come to a replacement is sparkling water and add some fruit to it.

Lynn, i really miss the taste too! I envy those people who say that they don’t like it once they stop drinking it for a few weeks.

All those studies are fake/disproven. It has never been shown to cause cancer.

That said – any time you can avoid something processed that is a good thing regardless of whether or not it is harmful.

I’ve heard of the Water Joe – I had a friend who used it to make coffee for an extra scary punch!

I didn’t have a lot of trouble giving up soda, but then again, I was never a diet soda person. These days, I rely on tea when I need a caffeine pick-me-up.

yes, that would be a caffeine double whammy to use water joe in coffee!

Congratulations on your DP breakup! Now if I could get my mother-in-law to break up with Diet Coke (multiple 44 ozs per DAY) that would be great! And The Lover of course loves his freaking Dr. Pepper. SIGH.

May have to get some of that for days when I need an afternoon boost. I love my coffee in the morning, but on tired days, I’m guilty of hitting the coke zero.

Caffeinated water just sounds like such an unnatural concoction I don’t think I could make myself drink it. Guess I’ll stick with my tea!

Although I sympathize with the caffeine addiction, I don’t think it’s a great idea for the planet to start drinking a ton of bottled water. I try to avoid buying plastic, particularly single-serve plastic.

caffeinated water?! that sounds like a godsend. you don’t get the cotton mouth after effects like you get with coffee though?

There is definitely controversy over aspartame. I agree with workoutmommy that eventually all these chemicals will catch up with us. The human body has an incredible ability to detoxify and cleanse. Some bodies are better than others. Check out a post of mine about high-fructose corn syrup about the effect of little things. http://sixweekworkoutprogram.com/high-fructose-corn-syrup/
