What’s your secret to getting off the couch and into your sneakers?

by workoutmommy on July 13, 2010

There are many, many days when the last thing in the world I want to do is workout.

I am exhausted from head to toe and feel like exercising is just one more chore that I don’t want to get done. What gets me in my sneakers and out the door? Well, the fact that it’s the ONLY break I get from my kids (don’t judge!) and that I KNOW I will feel 100x better after I am done.

It is also helpful to have peer pressure from my blogging friends to help get me off the couch and motivated!
On the way to boxing class last month I was going through my shopping list in my head and figured that I could always skip class and go to Target instead. Who would know, right? Just as I was approaching Target I got a text from my bloggy friend Jen.

It read: “I don’t want to go to class tonight, please make me go”

And there it was—just the KICK IN THE PANTS that I needed! I called her back (no texting because I was driving) and simply said that since I am going to class,  so she must go as well. And so we both did. And yes, I felt much better and that Target trip would have to wait for another day.

So what’s your secret to getting off the couch and into your sneakers? Crystal Light Pure Fitness is having a sweepstakes where you have the chance to win some awesome prizes just for answering this simple question!

I have to go first thing in the morning while I’m still sleepy and can’t talk myself out of it. Once the day gets rolling, other things always get in the way.

so very true! The more the day moves on the more excuses/issues seem to appear.

even though I press snooze one too many times, I get up because the proud feeling I get from just getting it done is so great. My co-worker, whom I’ve encouraged to do a 10000 steps a day pedometer program asks me every morning what I did. It is nice not having to say “nothing”. We also go for walks during the day a couple times a week despite doing a morning workout.

great job Rosa, especially on inspiring your coworker! I have found that its a challenge to get 10k steps per day!

Currently my motivation in lacing up my shoes first thing in the morning is to beat the awful hot, humid, muggy weather we have in KC. Running in the morning allows me to pound at the pavement in 75* weather vs. 95*. This is EXTREMELY beneficial on our long runs…9 miles feels SO much better in when it’s 20* cooler!

and isn’t it the best feeling when your 9 mile run is done before most of the world wakes up? :)

I don’t run, but I hit the gym for weights or Spinning, or the heavy bag in the garage in the morning. This is the only way I’ve been able to keep the routine going. What really keeps me in line, though, is friends who are as obsessive and determined as I am. That they are instructors and trainers themselves helps me more than anything else. They don’t allow me to have excuses. :)

Though as a mom of 2 (a 3 year old son and 5 month old daughter) I don’t have time to sit on the couch, but my motivation for getting my shoes on is knowing that my children will only run faster the older they get! I love knowing that I will be fit and strong enough to keep up with them, and insipire them to keep on running too.

I am a new reader as well — love your blog!

Jennifer–great point about running faster! It will also be good for when they start running in different directions, then you’ll really put that speedwork to the test! ;) thanks for reading!

Motivation is the big key to getting off that couch, its great to have a support network their to give you that extra motivation and push so sometimes training with a partner or friend is the way to go!

I have the summer off, which has motivated me to get into a new routine. Get out of bed, eat, then hit the trails for a good hike before home and a shower.

Plus I bought some cute work out clothes too, which helped make me feel all athletic and stuff. I’m thinking if I make it a routine, I’ll go and if I can keep it up all summer, then I really have it made. Plus I applied for a job that is walking distance from my house, so I think that might help too.

The hardest part is getting out the door. Whatever it is that gets you there is awesome. Friends, programs, journals, logs, and trainers can all do the trick. It’s just a matter of what works best for you! One day can seem like it doesn’t matter, but it’s frustrating to look back over the last few days and realize you didn’t workout. This can make you feel undisciplined and unhealthy. Routine makes a difference!
