Dear Diet Pepsi,
We are done.
You will NOT suck up my money and health any longer.
Pack your box and get out.
I mean it. (sniffle)
Love,
workout mommy
I’ve admitted before that I have a shameful addiction to this crap but the info from this article from Dr. Mercola was the final straw. (all puns intended!) As Dr. Phil would say, it’s time to get real.
So tell me, have you kicked your soda (diet or otherwise) habit?
What can I do for caffeine? I neeeeeeeeed it!!!
and no, I don’t like coffee or tea.
HELP!

chocolate? Of course you’d have to eat a lot…so not a good idea
great job breaking up!
thank you Tricia, although right now I’m having a hard time resisting that gorgeous little can still sitting in my fridge! (sob!)
ME! Ever since my oldest was born(4.5yrs ago!), I’ve had a wicked addiction to Sonics Vanilla Dr Pepper. I mean, it was BAD.
I literally just decided to stop going to Sonic. It’s so hard, but after a week, it’s not a big deal anymore.
I do drink coffee on occassion, but not often(and I only have a 4c pot).
Good Luck, the headaches are the WORST!
yes, you are right. I have the WORST headache of my life right now. Hoping I can survive!!!
I know that Sam’s used to sell a brand of caffienated water. I haven’t bought in about 10years so I don’t know if they still make it, but its worth a shot to find it. Goodluck!
thanks Della! someone sent me a link…I’m going to give a try!
Oh, that’s nice…a ‘biochemical warfare agent,’ and we’re just suckin’ it down like there’s no tomorrow
I’m on day 3 with no soda…I got your back girl!

Good for you! I don’t have a replacement for you, just know that you will feel better for ridding yourself of the sugar soda! I kicked my Coca-cola habit and I’m so happy I did. I will have one occasionally, but it is not an everyday thing.
I’m a coffee drinker and I severely cut back on its consumption this past April/May. I still drink it, just not every day and normally only one cup.
All the best!

Congrats on making this decision. I gave up diet pepsi about 7 or 8 weeks ago. The more I read about it the more I wanted to quit(poison in a bottle), and I’ve been struggling to loose weight, so myself and my PT thought it might be a good idea. The first week was horrible, I’m surprised my trainer, husband and kids didn’t start a support group!
I’ve had 1/2 glass and a couple of sips in that time and now think it tastes awful! My husband still loves the stuff so it’s in my house-but staying tough:-)
You should read the effects of caffeine on your insulin system-that was what helped me quit as well! I like coffee, so that helps but I’ve cut back maximum 2 cups/day-usually 1.
options(sorry mostly coffee/tea): *mild coffee with teaspoon of hotchocolate, *combine earl grey tea with lemon(or other berry flavour) tea and add a little honey(might help with taste), * occasional block of 80%dark chocolate, *lots of water
Good luck, warn those you love and hang in there, it’ll get better:)

I laughed at the support group comment and warning my family. So very true! I keep telling my kids to whisper, as if I have a hangover!
thanks for the tips!
I usually only have a diet coke when I am eating at a restaurant or if I have a rum and diet coke(which is only a couple times a year), but after reading that article I’m done with it now too. How gross.
Thankfully I do drink coffee so thats how I get my caffeine. Usually only one cup a day. Now what do I replace that adult beverage with?? lol

you might just have to drink it straight!
Have you tried some of the new iced teas out there? They’re really good and don’t even taste like tea, lol! (My favorite is Honest Tea Peach Ooh-La-Long.)
Woooohooooo!!!! What a GREAT little letter. I quit drinking soda regularly about 5 or 6 years ago. Now I’ll have one about every 2 months or so. Unlike candy, I was never a big fan of soda so it wasn’t that hard. I’m convinced that sodas are the cigarettes of tomorrow. Someday we will see how much damage they really are doing.
Ideas for caffeine when you don’t like tea or coffee??? Hmmmm….I have no idea. In a few weeks, you won’t even need caffeine anymore. I’d just wait it out and not eat chocolate b/c those small amount could make it really hard to stop if you had a strong addiction to the caffeine in the soda.
Fantastic decision!!!!! (((hugs))) Hope hugs are not inappropriate! He he!

You can do it! Don’t replace it just use the power you have inside of you. Your energy will come from your workouts and knowing that you are the master of your own mind.
You can do it. It’s tough at first, especially with kids. I was addicted to coffee and when I when I stopped cold turkey I had horrible headaches for a week, and it toon about a month to completely adjust. Then I had an addiction to diet pop. When I went cold turkey it was more difficult because I had a toddler and baby, but after about two weeks the headaches went away, and after a month I felt great. Sometimes I get a craving for a diet pop but I don’t give in otherwise the hard work would have been for nothing. If I need caffeine I drink ice tea. Hang in there. It will feet easier:)
Oh, and apparently I can’t spell, sorry.
First off, congrats on kicking the soda habit! I kicked mine cold turkey after reading the book “Skinny B*tch” (I think you’d be really interested in that book if you haven’t already read it). I’ve unsuccessfully been trying to replace my morning coffee with organic decaf green tea.
As for a caffeine replacement… hmmm that’s a toughie – it’s not all that great for you either, so maybe we can join hands, and help each other through the withdrawl?

Good for you! I WISH I could break up with Diet Coke, Diet Dr. Pepper, and Diet Cherry Pepsi. They are awful for you and I can’t stop drinking them. I also have a bad sugar-free gum addiction. I break up with gum, then start again, stop again, and so on! These are the only 2 fake sugar things left in my diet. Ugghh!

Alison, I LOVE to chew sugar free gum, especially on long runs! There is something so addictive about that aspartame!! (by the way, your little guy is adorable!)

Im still in awe…
I tried to quit Coke Zero. I lasted 17 days and made it through the worst part, which was the TERRIBLE headaches.
(I don’t drink/like coffee or tea either.)
Will be following your successful (b/c I know you will be!) journey!

sarah, I remember reading about you kicking the habit! Your comment says I “lasted” though….does that mean you are back on the Zero?
I broke up with Pepsi (the regular kind) over 10 years ago. Cold turkey. I didn’t drink coffee at the time (now I’m a coffee hound). I took excedrin for the headaches and just drank water. It takes 21 days to break a habit and 21 days to make a habit. You can do it!!! You will be better off for it.
The bonus: I dropped a bunch of weight just by changing that ONE habit!

Diet Coke. I didn’t know I was an “addict” until i became pregnant and had to quit. A lot of cranky days followed. I believe it was an article on Mercola that told me about apples. Apparently they give you the same boost you are looking for when you need caffeine. Since then, I’m back on it and need a push like this article to stop cold turkey. I feel like a hypocrite drinking it when all i do is provide fresh healthy stuff for my family. Thanks for the reminder there is one can left in the fridge and drawer full of apples that i’ll grab this afternoon instead ……
OMG, I can’t believe I forgot about this! Have you tried Zevia? It’s soda sweetened with stevia. It tastes a little different and can be hard t find, but it might just work for you.
Tea would be the healthiest alternative for your caffeine need. I know you said you didn’t like it but, trust me, you can make yourself get used to anything! How do I know? Years ago I made myself get used to Diet Coke in order to stop drinking regular Coke. Now I love it so much it’s proving very difficult for me to give it up even though I know I should!

I too have a really bad diet coke/diet pepsi addiction. I have quit before for a few weeks and always go back to it! I’ve been thinking lately that my drinking of the stuff is out of hand and I need to give it up again. But doing so makes me feel depressed, I feel like it’s my only bad habit that I have, can’t I have just one????
In the past when I have given it up I take lots of aspirin during those first couple of days to keep the headaches away, and drink a buttload of water as that seems to help too for some reason. This article does have me thinking…maybe I should give it a go and give it up!
What is it with diet soda… it’s like crack cocaine!! I used to be a diet coke addict and then I gave it up (for the most part). But every now and then I’ll have a weak moment and buy some and it never surprises me how quickly I can fall back into addict mode!!!
Thanks for the link to Mercola’s article… I’m off to read it right now. As for the caffeine, hmmmm…. no coffee or tea??? I’m stuck! Where else can one get a little caffeine?
WOW!!! Getting rid of diet soda…didn’t know so many people had this addiction! Did you know that 5 billion dollars…yes I said billion dollars is spent yearly on energy drinks alone….yes, diet soda is an energy drink!

Good for you! I “broke up” with Diet Coke when I found out I was pregnant but going cold-turkey wasn’t making me happy. I’ve had it maybe five times now? I used to drink (no joke) a 2 L myself! In a day! So having a small Diet Coke once in a blue moon seems more manageable than saying “never.”

I had an ugly break up w/ Pepsi many, many times. I finally broke up w/ it for good late last year. I didn’t enjoy coffee but learned to LOVE it and now it’s all good. I think you just have to learn to flavor coffee/tea it to suit your tastes.

Lisa – I gave up soda about 7 months ago and haven’t turned back. But, I happened to love tea and that’s my vice. I have black coffee in the morning and unsweetened iced tea or unsweetened green tea in the afternoon. Perhaps you can ease into it and you’ll eventually like it? Good luck!!!
Thanks for this amazing info… I think? I LOOVVVEEEE diet pepsi and would hate to have to do away with it but man that just sounds like bad news! Thankfully I love my coffee and tea though. I’ve been thinking about quiting, I guess now is a good time.
