Choose you!

by workoutmommy on May 27, 2010

How often do you put yourself and YOUR health first?
As moms, we tend to ignore our own needs before others.

I’m very happy to support the American Cancer Society’s new movement called Choose You, encouraging women to put their own health first in the fight against cancer.

As part of the Choose You movement, you sign an online pledge for a specific health goal in one of 5 categories: eat right, get active, get recommended health screenings, protect your skin, or quit smoking.    The website has a ton of resources and ideas to help you stay on track with your “Choose You commitment”.

The statistics about cancer are so startling.  According to the American Cancer Society, about half of all cancer deaths could be prevented if people maintained a healthy weight through diet and regular exercise; avoided tobacco products; and got recommended cancer screening tests. Unfortunately, we are usually too busy to do these things and therefore our health suffers.

I am choosing to make an appointment with a dermatologist for a skin screening.  After reading this blog post by Julie on the Choose You Blog, I realized I need to get a skin check.  Your turn–  what can you do to CHOOSE YOU this year?

I’m excited that The American Cancer Society is offering one of my readers a Choose You Healthy Lifestyle gift bag.  (it includes a tee shirt, sunscreen, water bottle, and more!)   To enter to win, leave a comment below with your answer to:

What pledge are you going to make to CHOOSE YOU this year?

Fine print: The winner will be chosen by random.org on Wednesday, June 2nd at 9pm.  Contest is open to US residents only.   I was provided with this information and gift by the American Cancer Society.

I’m going to continue to Choose Me by finding new and better ways to keep this healthy journey going. I’m going to eat more fresh foods, keep exercising as many days per week as I can, and remember that the scale is just a number.

I am going to Choose Me by losing weight. I will do that by making smart decisions about my eating, not being lazy about exercise, and refusing to feel bad when taking some time to put myself first – even if that means spending less time with friends.

Who wants to be my Choose Me friend. We can all use extra support.

I’m going to choose me by saying no to tanning salons. I did them in my teens and 20′s and now that I just turned 30 I feel thats its too much of a risk. I’m also going to make some time to finally lose this last 15-20 pounds.

I’m going to protect my skin! I lost my dad to melanoma in ’08, and I live in California. Sunscreen, rash guards, and yearly visits with the dermatologist for me!

As I approach my biopsy day and my nerves increase, it really really helps to see so many awesome women inspired to go get their skin checked!!! Thanks so much for this great post and keeping Choose You as a priority! (And of course, you know no need to enter me into your contest — so good luck to everyone else!!)

I am choosing to run my first half-marathon. I am back to running with my Little Man and I think a half is a good and challenging post-baby goal for a usual 5K-er!! I feel much more responsibility to myself now that I have someone depending on me. Taking care of my self by staying in shape and eating healthy are a lot easier when I look at my son’s smiling face every day! (and a skin screening is on my list too!!)

So far, I’ve lost 20 lbs of leftover baby weight, gone gluten free, and organic….so the next goals I am choosing are to schedule my overdue yearly skin check and run in a half marathon (Denver Oct 17th). I’ve never run in an organized race and love the challenge of this one. :)

Great post! After all, what good is family, relationships, and money if you don’t have your health? I am doing my family a favor by staying healthy and sticking around with them as long as I can.

I must get that baseline mammogram. The script has been in my wallet since January. Sometimes choosing “me” isn’t always fun, but still so important.
