It’s WORKOUT WEDNESDAY! Let’s get up and MOVE!
(disclaimer: this is a recycled post from 2007 but I decided it’s so applicable to my life right now that I am posting it again!)
As a busy mom of two three, I can only dream of the days when I can get a 60-90 workout into my day. The reality is that on some days I’m lucky if I have the time to brush my teeth. (no need to worry about the hair, that is what a hat is for!)
So I’ve come up with some creative ways to help you incorporate a little fitness into your busy mommy day.
- Laundry room squats
combine a front loader machine and piles of laundry and you have the perfect recipe for laundry squats. With each piece (or pieces) I shove in that machine, I must perform the perfect squat. - Cardio-laundry
run up and down the stairs to get various pieces of dirty clothing that is strewn about your house. Socks under the bed? Don’t forget your perfect squat to get those.
Lunge-a-palooza:
Spend 10 minutes doing nothing but walking lunges. Going to the kitchen for a drink? Lunge your way there. Outside playing with the kids? Lunge circles around them. Heading to the potty bathroom? Yep, you got it…lunge your way there. (bonus points if you squat while you are in there!)- Clean-ups:
find yourself on the floor cleaning up a spill? It’s the perfect time for a few push-ups! You can do them on your knees if necessary, just do as many as you can. Don’t worry, that spill will still be there when you are done! - Ab-lounger:
No need to buy expensive equipment for this one. Sit down, place feet flat on the floor, and lean back just a bit. Draw your abs in toward your navel…make sure you are breathing….and just hold the position. After about 20-30 seconds your abs will be having a party! - Table triceps: do a few set of tricep extensions off the end of that coffee or end table.
- Dance party: put on some good tunes and dance your way into a sweat with your kids. Fun and fitness for everyone.
These are just a few to get you started. Do you have any that you can share?

When my kids were younger, my favorite workout was putting them in the double stroller and going for a nice long walk. (We’d often go to an arboretum: beautiful scenery, fish, flowers, and small hills to walk up and down!)
I like the last one! Dance party! And I’m not even a mom… yet

Whenever you happen to have five minutes to relax (perhaps at night after dinner, or if you happen to watch a TV show), STRETCH. It’s not hard, it’s even relaxing, and it improves your flexibility.

Ah – nothing like a reminder to move – even when you dont think you have the chance to!
I did indeed miss my workout this Wednesday morning, but that’s ok. I’ve got the opportunity to take the stairs 3 flights up and down at work twice each day, so I’ll get SOME movement in!
Cheers
Matt
This is one of the touchiest subjects for women as a whole, but for the pregnant woman comes a whole other slew of notions, entitlements, and misconceptions. “Eating for two” is a truism that gets blown way out of proportion, as do the cravings and indulgences that the pregnant woman often feels she is downright owed. The fact is, the pregnant woman needs only about 300 extra calories per day than her not pregnant counterparts, and the majority of those calories should be from protein and good fats that the body needs to grow that 2nd body. To give you an idea of what 300 calories is, it’s about a bagel and cream cheese. It should be a hand full of raw almonds or a nice balanced salad, but a bagel and cream cheese is an easy reference. As far as the cravings go, most women have pre existing “weaknesses” that they binge on during pregnancy. Being with-child is often viewed as a free pass when it comes to food, for reasons that I mentioned earlier. “I am owed this. I deserve this. I need this. You get to eat what you want when you are pregnant. I am just doing what everyone else does.”
