I watched Food, Inc. and it has completely changed my relationship with food. I will NEVER buy meat (especially beef) again unless it is organic. Have you seen the movie? Once you do, you will understand why I am saying this.
Most of the beef we currently eat is cleaned with ammonia. Read that again. Ammonia. The government is on board with this and thinks it is okay. What is wrong with this world?
Don’t believe me? Watch this clip from the movie:
It is absolutely disgusting and sad at the same time. I look at the food that I’m feeding my kids and can’t help but think “I am poisoning them!”
Where can you get organic meats? We are lucky enough to have a Wegman’s near us that has a pretty good selection, albeit very expensive. ($8.99 per pound vs. $2.99 per pound)
You can also order organic, grass-fed beef online and have it delivered to your door. Rocky Mountain Organic Meats has a huge selection of products that are very reasonably priced. Please visit Workout Mommy Reviews for my experience with them.
So going forward, I will only be purchasing organic foods, especially meats. Yes, it is (way) more expensive but what choice do I have? I can’t allow my kids to eat this crap poison. I can’t help but wonder– what does President Obama feed his kids?
Do you eat organic?

Food Inc. has been on my “to watch” list for so long. We just never seem to get around to watching movies around here. Hopefully soon-ish…
We buy organic whole milk exclusively. And we try to buy as much organic produce as we can. We recently bought organic meat for the first time too and we thought it tasted better (is that possible?). I think we’ll be buying organic meats from here on out…even if it is pricey.

The other nice thing about buying the more expensive organic meat is that you tend to buy a bit less. This helps remind you to fill out meat dishes with vegetables and healthy carbs.
Can’t wait to watch Food Inc., now! Did they talk about dioxin build-up in large animals (mostly in the fat). This happens to all (even organic) cows. I’m not a vegetarian, but I do feel like it’s harder and harder to find non-toxic food these days. Organic is much better for meat and milk, especially!

And this is why our family has been “mostly vegan” for the last 6 months. Gross, gross, gross!

We just recently started organic almost exclusively. I seriously haven’t felt more satisified hunger wise in a very long time. It’s so worth it on so many levels.

uh oh.
see? methinks thats why Ive rented it and not watched…yet.
I love my beefjerky. although it is “organic”—are they lying to me?
We buy our beef from a friend. He raises the cows on his land, they are grass fed, no drugs, no nasty feed, and butchered locally. It is not that expensive, we pay just over $2 a pound. It is not offically organic, but it actually is organic.
Depending on where you live you could try and find a farmer who does this. They do exist, but can be hard to find.
Now I wish we got our chicken that way. He (our friend) tried raising chickens but it was way too expensive, and a lot of work (comapared with the cows, which he does almost nothing work wise).
I’ve gone Vegan two days a week and feed my kids beef only once a week – the other days I cook chicken or turkey.
Have you read Skinny Bitch? It’s not just beef that’s got scary crap in it – coffee, pop, other prepared food… I’m so much more conscious about the food I feed my family now.
Thanks for raising awareness Lisa – you rock!
I watched this recently too. DEFINITELY brought back to mind what I already knew but let the high prices get to me. Now I’m having to rebalance my food budget to be healthier.

My girlfriends and I were just talking about Food Inc last night when we were out. One of them said she split a cow with a friend of theirs – purchased it from a grass fed-only farm. This is possibly another affordable way to get higher quality beef, depending on where you live.
i refuse to watch because i am too scared that i will be so beyond grossed out. i am trying to eat better and more organic.

I would sooner go vegan than eat non-organic meat. (And I’m a total carnivore, so that’s saying something.)
I used to get the most completely God-awful cramps you can imagine. (Couldn’t go to work, couldn’t do anything but throw up.) I went one month eating only organic meat, and managed to cut the pain by 50%. I didn’t change anything else but that, and the effect was dramatic.
There’s no way I’d go back to buying non-organic meat.

Ummm, I became a vegetarian 7 years ago because I had to read Peter Singer’s ‘Animal Liberation’ in college. I haven’t seen the movie, but I get the jist, and it’s all very cruel and disgusting…
My husband and I both watched it recently and it disgusted us, broke our hearts and made us angry. All good things because it opened our eyes to the reality of it all.
