5 thoughts from a new mom

by workoutmommy on December 12, 2009

Here are a few ramblings from my postpartum, sleep deprived, mind.  Franky [Feb '05]

1. Stepping on the scale the 3rd day after having a baby is NOT a good idea.   This will trigger many of those postpartum hormones and you will end up a sobbing mess on the floor.   (Well, at least now you have a starting point and a definitive goal.)

2. Trying to do too much after having a nine pound  baby is a bad idea.  Listen to your doctor and take it as easy as possible.

3. The ShowerHug is a new mom’s best friend.  I plan to do a full review of this item later, but I could not wait to tell you about it.   It is a MUST HAVE item for any new mom!   Go buy several now as future baby shower gifts.  Your friends will hug you a lot!

4. Find happiness in the small victories.   Do some light strength training and envision where your muscles used to be.   Trust they will be back again soon.

5. Sleep is important.  More important than reading emails, tweeting, and facebook—so if the baby is sleeping, you should be too!

In summary gang, I’m not sleeping at all and trying to hold myself together.  I’ve got a lot of fat to work off, which will hopefully happen in the near future.     I just have to keep reminding myself—Never underestimate the power of a workout!

Hi Lisa,

First of all, again, CONGRATULATIONS!!! What an exciting (and exhausting) time! :)

Remember to enjoy this time and be kind to yourself. You will get your body back, but you are right, at this point it’s so important to get as much rest as you can. Also, my first baby was 10 pounds (he is now a teenager) and the toddler was only 5 pounds. It was a HUGE difference in recovery for me!

Take care of yourself, and enjoy this time of having a little baby. You know how quickly it passes…

“Sleep is more important than the internet” – I need that tattooed on my forehead. In the meantime gotta go check out that shower hug thingy!

Hope you are getting more sleep these days than I am! Doubtful but I’m hoping he’s a good sleeper for you!

Thank you so much for letting us know how you are doing. I am hoping I have only 2 more weeks to go. Did you end up using a belly wrap? I have friends who did and I am going to for sure. Not so much for asthetics (though my female vanity is part of it) but for back stability. My back is killing me!

The shower hug looks interesting indeed, would like to see a review from you soon.

I totally agree with no.4. Happiness is actually a habit. When you look for things to appreciate you’ll start to do it more often and thus becoming a happier person and your outer world will change.

My recommendation is Sahrmann exercises! 10 months later I’m still doing them. They make my core happy and so baby friendly!

My aunt’s twin girls are just 14 months old right now, and I can definitely appreciate that being a new mom must be HARD work!! But it’s worth it, right? :)

Congratulations again, Lisa.

The Shower Hug really is amazing, isn’t it? I wouldn’t shower without it for several weeks after baby #2 was born…

Give yourself some grace about your body/weight. You did just have a baby, after all. ;) I bet you’ll be fit and fabulous again in absolutely no time.

Your friend,
Stephanie
