I am a sugar fiend.
I love cookies, brownies, candy, chocolate, and did I mention brownies? Everyone needs a vice and mine happens to come in the form of baked goods.
Last month I took my initial glucose test. For those of you who are unfamiliar with what this is, it is a blood test taken during pregnancy (between 26-28 weeks) to determine how your body processes sugar. Pregnant women who have never had diabetes before but who have high blood sugar (glucose) levels during pregnancy are said to have gestational diabetes.
I failed this test.
So, I went on to take the more detailed 3 hour glucose tolerance test. During this time, the doctor draws blood from you every hour (yes, ouch!) and compares the four blood draws to determine again how your body is processing the sugar.
I failed again.
However, my failure was marginal so my midwife has requested that I come back and repeat the test in two weeks. Meanwhile, this means really cutting sugar out of my diet.
So no brownies, cookies, candy, brownies, or brownies.
Add to this no intense exercise (because I’m pretty big now and it hurts!).
What does this make?
A very grumpy (yet sugar free) mommy.
The upside? I’m finally kicking my sugar addiction.
Stay tuned for more about gestational diabetes tomorrow and how it can affect both you and your baby during pregnancy.
In the meantime, I’m going to daydream about lollipops and running marathons.
Have an ACTIVE day gang just because you CAN!

Oh no! I remember how much exercise hurt during my pregnancy, and I too love sweets.
At least it’s only temporary? Wish I could help more than just stating the obvious!
I was gestational diabetic the last 2 of out of my 3 kids. It really stinks. I do hope you are not. The up side if you are however…. is that you will have to eat so well… that your weight is really controlled the rest of your pregnancy. I only gained 24-26 pounds with both of those pregnancies (vs. 54 with my first). Good luck!

Hugs, Lisa! No pregnant woman should have to go sugar-free esp. at the end! Good for you for doing what’s best for your babe though – I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you for the follow-up! PS> I so know what you mean about exercise getting really uncomfortable!

Phew, that’s tough! I’m baked goods fiend too. Funny though, during my pregnancy I didn’t really have an interest in sweets. I wanted the salty stuff instead, which is so not how I usually am. Hang in there!

i had GD with both my girls and i love sweets, it was hard but i found little treats that quenched my need, 100 calorie bars my reeses, or just one piece of dark chocolate with a bit of Peanut butter, i was able to control it with diet and i learned what was really bad – PIZZA – plus exercise helped to keep it low. good luck…..

That’s the nice thing about midwives. They pay attention to “margins” and don’t rush immediately to medications or hospital stays or anything like that.
Are you planning to give birth at home, at a birth center, or at a hospital? How much longer do you have until baby arrives? I’m so excited for you and your family.

I had pretty severe gestational diabetes during my pregnancy and it totally sucked!
I had to check my blood sugar 4 times a day. Then I had to give myself insulin 3 times a day. That’s 7 times a day I had to prick myself with a needle. ARGH!
And with all that pricking, I still couldn’t keep my sugar under control. The doctors set me up with a nutritionist who told me what to eat and still, My sugar stayed over 150. WTF?
And yet, I had a healthy baby who was only 6 pounds, 7 ounces. She did have bad jaundice and stayed in the hospital for 4 days.
It was during this experience that I began to learn how I should be eating.

I was borderline diabetic while pregnant too. I adjusted my eating (a little) and was fine. I craved chocolate iced donuts.

I wrote a little bit about this on my blog too. I am 25 weeks pregnant and have been trying to stick to my mostly Paleo/Zoneish eating habits. But, my family just moved cross country and while on the road it was just too easy to hit the sweet stuff. I found the more I ate the easier it became to rationalize eating more. I am hoping my glucose test is okay.
