Fat vs. muscle

by workoutmommy on August 25, 2009

Today I heard someone say:

“five pounds of fat and five pounds of muscle are still the same. I just want to lose five pounds!”

No! They are NOT the same!

Five pounds of muscle is metabolically active tissue which helps your body burn more calories even when you are not doing anything.

Five pounds of excess fat just takes up space. It does nothing for you.

tricepdip.jpgSo if you are on a weight loss journey, you want to focus on losing FAT not muscle. How do you do this? By strength training and doing fun exercises like push ups, planks, tricep dips, etc.
Build up your muscle mass and you WILL see fantastic changes in your body!

Get up and get lifting gang!

So true. I provided nutrition counseling in a personal training gym. I weighed people, took their measurements and body fat with calipers to track their progress. Most women only cared if the number on the scale decreased. Even if they lost inches or their body fat decreased, they still didn’t believe me that losing FAT was most important and not muscle. If you go on a diet and workout very little or not at all, you’re most likely losing muscle and water weight, along with some fat. As we age we lose muscle mass, starting in our teenage years for women! Don’t lose that muscle, maintain and build it! The more muscle you maintain the better your metabolism will continue to function. Great topic!

While there are thousands of blogs talking about loosing weight, the thing I like about your blog is that it offers no instant miracle formula like popping a pill and next day you are two pounds lighter. I feel more bloggers should accept the reality about how weight loss occurs naturally and its benefits in leading a healthier life.

The truth about weight loss is that, none of the quick fixes work for it. It starts with a firm determination that you want to lead a healthy and active lifestyle. Once you achieve that mindset, the rest of the journey becomes very easy. We first need to plan with a sound mind what our objectives in life are and why do we want to loose weight. Once we decide to do it, it helps a lot to read weight loss motivating articles.
