Healthy eating combined with road trips is always a challenge. Yes, you can pack your own snacks but when you are faced with a long car ride and two unruly children, sometimes it is nicer to stop somewhere for a change of scenery and pace.

Our “fast food” restaurant of choice is always Subway. Their FRESH FIT ™ menu has eight different sandwiches without cheese or condiments and each sandwich offers 2 servings of fresh veggies, five grams of fiber. I got the new Tuscan Chicken Sandwich and it was delicious!
I also love their FRESH FIT FOR KIDS™ menu which comes with a choice of juice or milk and has apple slices on the side. This is a MUCH better option than deep fried chicken nuggets and french fries!
On our most recent vacation, we visited several Subway restaurants and found each of them to be clean and comfortable. There is something about the smell of fresh baked bread that calms you down the minute you walk in the door!
My only gripe about Subway is the lack of napkins they like to give out. Every single time we go, our bags consist of no more than 2 napkins a piece. I wonder, is that company policy? I’ve got a messy family, we need more napkins please! (which by the way, they do give you if you request them…I’m just curious why they are not more readily available?)
Tell me what you think of Subway (or their napkin policy) and be entered to win a $15 gift card to any Subway Restaurant. Winner will be chosen at random at 9pm EST on Wednesday, July 1, 2009 and must have a valid US address.
Disclaimer: The PR firm for Subway sent me a gift card to try out their sandwiches for review, however I am under no obligation to do so nor to make the review positive. This review reflects my personal opinion about how much I really do love Subway. And we go there a lot. ![]()

Is it weird that when I was preggo with Baby I CRAVED Subway? Italian BMT on wheat with lettuce and pickles. Mmmmm…
My favorite Subway sandwich is the Chicken Teriyaki. Yum! (And I agree about the napkin issue).
I have not noticed the napkin issue… but the cups they give you for water are SUPER SMALL!!!!! My only complaint. Love their sandwiches!

Believe it or not I had never eat in a Subway before last week. I was not quite sure what to get, but ended up opting for the Chicken Teriyaki sandwich. It WAS yummy although the sauce a little on the sweet and gloppy side. I didn’t notice anything about the napkins.

I’m with you on the napkins…and they’re so thin!
I love a 6 in Turkey on Wheat…hold the cheese…spinach, green peppers, cucumbers…sweet onion sauce. YUM!

I agree, Subway is a good option, however, whenever possible I like to hit up the deli counters at grocery stores and have them make me a fresh sandwich there and I pick out some fresh fruit and water while I’m there. It’s always half the cost of a subway sandwich lunch….that’s just the frugal mom in me!

I LOVE Subway!!!!! It is the only fast food place I will eat ate. I always go there on road trips and ask for extra napkins
5……5……5 dollar footlong! I LOVE SUBWAY! I always feel that I’m getting a healthy sandwich that’s affordable. Great road trip stop too.
never noticed the lack of napkins, but I’m sure I’ll see it once Grant starts shoveling food in his face
I like Subway sandwiches, and Subway is a really good choice on road trips. And the smell of freshly baked bread is another plus!

I love splitting a foot-long Subway Melt with my husband. Good thing that’s the most unhealthy sandwich there, but it is delicious. And yes they need to give out more napkins

We like Subway, it’s pretty much the only ‘fast food’ place around here where I can get something healthy. We don’t eat in the restaurant so I can’t comment on the napkins because we use what we have at home.

We love Subway–but you are right! With our 4 messy kids we always need more napkins, then, by the time I go to ask for more the line is so long it is hard to get a workers attention to ask for some. It’s my son’s favorite fast food–he always asks if we can “eat fresh”!

They will give you more if you ask. But for me by myself that is enough and it is environmentally friendly not to give more unless requested.
I love getting a footlong roasted chicken breast on Ital. Herbs and Cheese at lunchtime to split with a friend. Also great to picnic with hubby. I agree on the napkins comment, but will also rave about the more modern rewards program. I love that I don’t have to keep up with those little stamps that get lost (and nasty) in your wallet.
Maybe they are able to save money by not setting boxes of napkins out? If we are taking the subs home, we usually don’t need very many anyway. If we eat there, I ask for more. Very happy the servers use gloves to handle the food, but some places handle the COOKIES while still making sandwiches, until waiting to do that last & I am HIGHLY allergic to nuts & am afraid of cross-contamination in those Subways..
I love Subway because I can have my sandwich loaded up with veges so it’s really filling. I do agree that they are kind of cheap when it comes to the napkins. With all of those veges, the sandwich does get messy.
We like subway esp when travelling since we can buy a foot long and share it for less $ than most restaurants! Yum!!
I agree about the napkins, but love Subway anyway
I love Subway!! In fact, they are building a new Subway just one block from my house, (also a first for our town woo hoo). I can’t wait until it opens
I am a life timer on Weight Watchers program. I love subway because I can get a lot of food for a small amount of points! It is one of the few fast food places where I can eat and not blow all my points for the day. I especially love the ones that still have the light lays potato chips (with olestra). Not all of them have them anymore. I also like the new lays southwest light chips.
We like Subway, it’s pretty much the only ‘fast food’ place around here where I can get something healthy. I always feel guilty about using too many napkins

I always get more napkins, which are especially useful when we’re on a road trip. If you don’t use them all, stick them in the glove compartment for future unexpected accidents or even as a scratch paper (they aren’t the softest napkins I’ve ever felt). I like subway as well and find it has a wide range of offers for those with more particular tastes like vegetarians, meat-lovers, children’s taste buds and even the breakfast eaters!

The seafood? sub with the works is my favorite sandwich. Usually eat at home so napkins aren’t a problem.
In general, Subways are a good bet. I have been to a couple of their stores that were not run well & ought to have their franchises revoked. One store in Mt. View, CA is horrible. They skimp on the sandwich ingredients and refuse to give you more than two napkins. And a couple of times I got no napkins at all. I like Subway but I’ll never go to that store again.
I used to LOVE going to Subway. But.. my local Subway changed ownership and has become rather confusing. They have their regular menu, but then lots of printed-from-a-printer-losing-ink posters everywhere touting the “specials.” But if I order a “special” I am told it isn’t available.
Unfortunately, the counter gals don’t speak English very well, so it is difficult to order. (I get NO napkins in my bag, unfortunately.)
I love the flatbread sandwiches and the chipotle sauce. I loved the seafood when it was available, but it is no longer offered. I also loved the ability to order the “Southwest Steak” sandwich while it was available, because that included the chopotle sauce – whereas if I try to order the sauce on a “regular” sandwich, the counter gals get confused.
I love subway too. We go there quite often too. Funny about the napkins.. we feel the same. I’m a messy eater and never get enough!

One of the best sub joints out there
i’ve always been a fan of the big veggie salad – the pickles and banana peppers are so subway and don’t come on any other salads!
Subway is probably one of the few healthier fast food alternatives out there. A sandwich loaded with veggies is better for you than one with nitrite containing meat and fatty cheese.

I like the $5 footlong specials. The sub is more than enough food for me and my husband and the price sure is right!!
They are probably trying to cut costs limiting their napkins. I’ll forgo a few napkins for the $5 footlong any day. Also, if you rip the napkins in half, you’ll have four instead of two!!
meatball=very messy.many napkins needed.
Two napkins seems OK to me. No sense in just throwing extra napkins at people, especially since they’ll give you more without hassle.
My family has always loved Subway, especially for food on trips. We learned to ask for napkins to overcome the lack of napkins given out. I imagine it is their way to conserve and save a tree, and a few bucks by not wasting them.
However, having been diagnosed as Celiac, Subway is problematic to me. Celiac means I have an allergy to gluten, which is in everything, but mostly wheat, oats and barley. I could go on forever but if you want to know more about it, there are a ton of sites on the internet that can fill in all the details. Short of it is that I have to order salads now to avoid the gluten.
I don’t understand why the charge an extra dollar if you have the salad instead of the sub. I would think the bread was just as costly as a little more lettuce. The salads are a bit unpredictable. The first one I had at a store upstate SC was fantastic. They had spinach and romaine lettuce in addition to iceberg and tons of different toppings. The woman who put it together was all about what I wanted and built a masterpiece. However, it’s been tough to find similar quality and they are really unpredictable. The salads really are not worth the cost.
Don’t ever ask them to just give you the sandwich without the bread. I haven’t found one who would agree to do that.
But still when we travel, Subway is the one place everyone can agree upon and we have stopped there more than once a day on some longer trips. The $5 foot longs are GREAT for our crew. The value can’t be beat!
Wendy, I also think its wrong that they charge you extra for a salad! And ever since they got rid of their Atkins items the locations near me all dropped the baby spinach. (which they always got annoyed that I wanted on a regular sandwich. Sometimes they charged me extra for it!) I think the unpredictability comes with the franchise and the training. Maybe Subway will start introducing some gluten-free items?
SUBWAY is FREAKIN AWESOME! Who cares about napkins or cups? It’s the quality and taste of the food that I am after!
I love subway, especially the veggie wraps. Don’t fret over the napkins. Lots of places are cutting down on paper. I belong toweight watchers and they no longer provide a papertowel for you to use when stepping onthe scale to be weighed. YTou need to have socks or bring you own paper towel. This is to save some trees and the green things that so many people have bought into. Anyway I do love subways and they are a good choice when trying to get your weight down.
I like that Subway is the reason the show Chuck is coming back on NBC next year.
And I don’t have a problem with their napkin policy as I’m not very messy and it would be wasteful and not very eco-friendly to put a bunch of napkins in everyone’s bags since many people would only need one.
I love their food, especially the Veggie sub! I agree about the napkins. It is a little strange, probably some sort of cost saving measure?
I love the turkey sub with spinach, peppers, cukes, olives, oil and vinegar.
I love Subway!!! They have excellent salads! I love to get the roasted chicken with creamy italian… so good and I always feel great knowing that I had a healthy lunch!!
I love Subway. I used to get their tuna subs but have changed to chicken teriyaki, and other choices just to spice up my eating. Ever since my friend introduced me to the onion sauce, I need to have that on my sub! I never noticed anything about the napkins, but that’s probably because I always eat Subway at home and have extra napkins around
my only complaints about subway…
no drive through! sometimes i don’t want to get my kids out of the car but i don’t want to feed them crap either so subway would be a perfect choice!
oh and no play areas. i would love love love it if a subway near me had a play place so that my moms group could meet there for lunch and playtime for the kids in the a/c. see the heat is already in the triple digits here in texas and the hot part of summer isn’t here yet!
other than those two issues we love subway. my husband eats there almost every single day for lunch!
Normal to Natalies last blog post..Momma, hellll me… PWEESE!
I could eat Subway for every meal. MMMMM. I do ask for extra napkins though. My subs are messy, one napkin is never enough.
I’ve also noticed the shortage of napkins given out. You shouldn’t have to ask for them, and they should put some where the customers have access to them. If that’s done it would really help. Please enter me to win the gift card, I’ll definetly use it as soon as I receive it. My wife and I love their food, but can’t afford it very often {on limited income}.
healthybeb-congrats, you are the winner! Please email me your mailing address and I’ll send out your gift card!
