Too old for exercise? Think again!

by workoutmommy on June 18, 2009

It doesn’t matter if you are a toddler or a senior,  exercise and movement is for EVERYONE!

Case in point:  my 81 year old Aunt.   She is in fantastic shape thanks to daily exercises such as walking, biking, and lifting weights.    She doesn’t actually believe she is in great shape though,  her activity level is just her way of life.  She knows no different and therefore finds it odd that I wanted to feature her! (check out the pictures below, she’s pretty darn fit!)

Another case in point:  my 3.5 year old.  He loves all things fitness and exercise, and literally jumped at the chance to exercise with us.   To him, it’s not a chore.  It’s FUN!   (and it can be for you too! Find a way to make it fun!)

This week, exercising on the deck with an ocean view has been great FUN!  Even though we are technically on vacation, we are staying active by:

Doing lunges:

Squats (with bear claw hands, thanks to The Wiggles!):dot2

Tricep Dips:

And even kettlebell swings! (that’s an 18lb bell too!) dot1dot6

(my little guy wanted to prove that he could pick it up, at which point I ran over to grab it from him! No children, toes, or decks were damaged during these exercises!)

So, no matter what your age gang, we ALL need to get up and get moving!

Have you been active today?
NO EXCUSES!

Great reminder! I love exercising with my toddler. He truly makes working out fun! And I hope I’ll be biking, walking, and lifting weights at 81!

Great point. I’m a big fan of shouting from the rooftops that exercise has no age limit. My parents, aged 76 and 73, train at my gym every week.

I saw the images with your husband and kid exercising on the deck with an ocean view and I figured to myself, oh well, they are lucky to have a nice view to do their routine. Then I scrolled down your post and read, NO EXCUSES. I suddenly realized, with or without a great view, one needs to be healthy and do his body a favor.

Wow Lisa! Your grandma looks like she’s only 60! She actually looks way more fit than most 60 year olds too! That indeed is inspiration – its like I always say – use it or lose it! I treated far too many geriatric patients who had things like adhesive capsulitis in my AT days from never ever doing any overhead exercises. I learned very quickly how important it is to do even small things like stretch in the shower. Good for your grandma – I would love to meet her!
