My legs are so sore I can barely move (but it’s all good!)

by workoutmommy on April 23, 2009

kgwalkinglunge.jpgMy favorite strength exercise has always been the walking lunge.  I used to be able to lunge the perimeter of a tennis court twice without much effort.

Notice this is past tense.

In the past 2 months, I have not done one single walking lunge. I just have not felt lunge-worthy.

So the other day I decided it was time to start again.  I did 50 walking lunges while the kids played in the driveway.  I sweated through them and definitely was challenged, but otherwise it felt FANTASTIC! I fell back in love with the walking lunge.

That loving feeling came to a screeching halt the next morning when I could barely haul myself out of bed!  My legs, it seems, did not enjoy the return to lunging.  I cringed in pain every time I had to walk, bend, sit, or basically move at all.
Note to self: do some walking lunges every single day.

So if you fall off the fitness wagon (like me), the best thing you can do is get right back on.  Yes, you’ll probably be sore, but as John (Cougar) Mellencamp would say it “hurts so good”.

Remember his video?  Check it out for a good laugh (and trip down memory lane):

Now, how many walking lunges have you done today?

Yes, lunges are great! Very functional exercise and translate over very well in the “real world” we all lunge many times throughout the day w/o even realizing it…if you’re having any knee problems, you can perform reverse lunges, they are are easier on the knees. Keep lungin’!

my first experience with walking lunges was with my trainer two weeks ago. he had me carry 5 lb weights in each hand as i did a lap around the gym… one word… OUCH!! lol

i know it will be worth it though!!

How funny that you wrote this post. I’ve been doing them while on the track at the park. My toddler can be slow some times so I started doing walking lunges while he walks with me. How’s that for multi-tasking!? lol

I love/hate lunges too. I like to add a 3 – 5 lb weight and curl them too…but only after I can do lunges and still walk the next day :)

Hahahahah, that’s all I have to say. That’s how I felt last year when you made me lunge around the park with baby strapped on ;-) Okay, it’s nice out now…maybe I’ll let you kick my butt into doing some more soon.

I have been avoiding lunges for a loooong time now. I guess I have been afraid of the pain… I have been looking for a way to mix up my workouts and will add some lunges. Thanks for the motivation! Not so sure how thankful I’ll feel when I’m really sore though… :)

I do 50 of these every morning before my walk. I also love tricips dips and do 30 of those every morning after I put on my running shoes.

If it’s one exercise I hate – it has to be the lunge! It hurts and I have terrible balance, but I keep doing ‘em anyway.

Ugh, gotta admit, I do not enjoy lunges. But it feels fantastic AFTER completing a bunch of them!

I LOVE lunges and do them around the tennis court, too.

I have been neglecting my strength training lately, and did a core class Friday – I am still sore today. But you’re right, it feels good to know you’re engaging those muscles again!!

Glad your up and at it. I really enjoying doing k-bell squats and swings if I had to pick a favorite.

OMG! I can’t walk now!

I haven’t done walking lunges in ages, and went overboard!

Note to self — Add walking lunges back into your workout.

It burns so good!
