Many thanks to Sahar from FatFighterTV for this great clip on food journaling!
This is something I definitely need to start doing, how about you?

You can’t overestimate the value of journaling (journalizing?) your food and exercise. Besides bringing about a greater awareness to the intake and output of energy I think it really puts into perspective how many calories people really take in. People are often surprised by their intake and everyone I’ve ever known who applied journaling properly experienced success, whether their objective was weight loss or improving the quality of their food intake. Studies show that almost everyone underestimates their caloric intake and overestimates their energy output, and then is surprised when they gain weight.

Maaan, I guess I am alone in the fact that journaling can make this nonobsessed woman obsessive.
Doesnt work for me.

I do agree that keeping a food journal is helpful to keep track of how much and what types of foods you’re eating but it can become overly obsessive. I did it for a long time and want to get back to it. Before I would write down the food, the size, get the calories, etc. I think I overdid it so I might try again by just jotting down the food I’m eating or take pictures. I don’t know yet.

Journaling used to send me over the edge with getting crazy obsessive and eating-disordered… but right now its working very well for me. Am able to take a step back and track it all objectively; it feels good to be able to do that after having so many issues with it in the past!

I’m with you MizFit. I downloaded Lose It (a free app for the iPhone) and was logging every single thing I put in my mouth along with calories burned during exercise. Talk about becoming obsessive! It was totally taking over my life and I found that I was punishing myself for straying just a bit and having more than 1 serving of triscuts! It certainly helps to see just how much you are eating and more importantly, what kinds of food you are putting in your body, but I think a small snap shot of maybe a week would be better for your sanity. Now, I’m almost like an addict. I’m having to slowly ween myself from logging everything down.
Keeping a journal is a great way to keep track of exactly what goes into your mouth AND how you’re feeling when you eat. I have to say that my clients who keep a food journal are always more successful than those who don’t.
Thanks for having me! I don’t journal ALL the time, but I find when I really want to make sure I’m getting enough fiber, or protein, or fewer calories or whatever, it really helps me to write it down for a few weeks. Then, I stop until I feel like I need to do it again for whatever reason.
I can testify that writing down meals keeps me on track. Also when I write down my exercise and post it on the wall it keeps me motivated. Once I stopped writing down my food I noticed that my eatting habits started to slip back into bad habits.
