Get kids covered with UV Skinz

by workoutmommy on March 30, 2009

As a kid, we used to sit on the beach all day long with barely a drop of sunscreen on.  Our parents had no idea about the harmful effects of the sun and the potential for skin cancer.  We burned and blistered and only just now are starting to see  consequences.  My close friend had a melanoma removed from her arm three years ago.  She no longer goes out in the sun uncovered, despite living in sunny Florida.

sparks_familyRhonda Sparks lost her husband to melanoma in 2005.   He was only 32 years old.   He left behind 3 beautiful boys that Rhonda vows to keep sun-safe.   Rhonda founded UVSkinz and devotes her time to raising awareness about the danger of the sun and helping to “get kids covered!” all over the nation.

UVSkinz produces swimshirts and focuses on providing the highest quality and hippest designs so that kids literally want to “Live in our Skinz”.

Celebrity mom (and Desperate Housewife) Marcia Cross swears by them saying:

home_right“I love these skins!! My daughters have not been out in the sun without them. They can swim and play without me worrying about sun damage. I plan on using them for years to come.”

Rhonda sent me two shirts for my boys and I really cannot wait for the weather to warm up so they can wear them.    The UVSkinz shirts provide 50+ UV sun protection and come in sizes ranging from babies to adults.

I love them because they cover most of their little bodies without having to slather on sunscreen all day long.   (especially given the recent concern over the dangers of some chemicals in sunscreen.)

The shirt features are:

  • a larger neck hole, for easy on, easy off
  • name tag on the inside collar
  • raglan cut sleeves for maximum range of motion
  • unique micro fiber blend for quick drying (so kids can wear them all day)
  • comfort fit, which is less restrictive than traditional rash guard shirts
  • Each shirt comes with a silicon bracelet for your child that says “Live in my skinz”

You can also get sun hats, skirts, and boardshorts to help protect your little ones from the sun.

Skin cancer is 100% preventable if caught early! Protecting your skin during the first 18 years of life can reduce the risk of some types of skin cancer by up to 78%.

If you buy one piece of clothing this summer, please make it a UVSkinz shirt for your kids and for yourself.  You can also win one here! I have one UV Skinz item to give away to one lucky reader.

Please leave a comment below telling me which shirt you like best and you will be entered in this contest.   The winner will be chosen at random on Saturday, April 4th at 10pm EST.   This contest is open to US addresses only.

Cover up and stay safe!

(I like the Popsicle one.)
I’m paranoid about sun exposure now. I lost my dad 5 months ago today to melanoma. His was discovered internally, which we didn’t even know was a possibility. It eventually spread to his brain.
I heard the other day that sunscreen is not enough, that we need to cover up. So these sound like a great idea.

I love this idea!! I grew up burning and blistering and now I bathe my kids in sunscreen but I do worry about the chemicals in. Now if I could just get my kids to wear these!!

My son would wear the Taylor Blue Tie-dye Skinz. I had my 2nd melanoma removed about 2 months ago–scary stuff! Yes, I was the no sunscreen generation that went to highschool going to the tanning beds everyday…now I’m staying on top of it!

What a great idea! I’d love the Carly Blue/Purple long-sleeved shirt for our 2-year-old daughter. The blue would really bring out her sparkling blue eyes and I would feel better knowing her skin was protected from the Arizona rays this summer.

It’s wonderful that UV Skinz offers clothing options for adults too. I’m definitely going to bookmark the site.

my mom has had a melanoma removed along with a lymph node close to it and since then i have been a sun screen addict. i would choose one of the plain white shirts for my husband or one of the navy ones for my little boy that wiggles so much it is hard to get him covered in sun screen!

I would love to choose the Sarah – Long-Sleeve – Black/White Aloha shirt. This is actually for my daughter who is going to be waterskiing for the first time this summer. In the past she has watched while my husband and I and our son and whomever else is on the boat waterski, and for some reason she just didn’t want to try or learn. Out of the blue she announced that she couldn’t wait to try it so I thought this would be nice to surprise her with and give her a chance to start off on the right foot with some cool and protective gear! Thank you so much for the opportunity to enter and I sent out some Twitter love for you too about your giveaway!

I LOVE this idea…but with 5 small kids, it could get pretty expensive! I guess no cost is too much to prevent any skin damage. I, of course, love the kids long sleeve Brooke shirt in the brown and pink. Very stylish. I don’t think my fashionista daughters would have any problem wearing it with some cool bottoms! Great website.
