It is time for another installment of “One Fit Mommy”! As I surf around the blogosphere, I come across fit moms (and dads too!) who inspire me to fitness. From there, I hunt them down and force them to tell me their secrets, which I then share with you!
Today’s fit mommy is Lorraine, mom of 2, who blogs over at Wifey’s House and Ask Wifey. Lorraine is also a published author of Help! I’m a Newlywed…What Do I Do Now?: Wife-saving Advice Every New Bride Must Know to Survive the First Year of Marriage.(which would make a great shower gift!)
She is obviously a very busy mom who says she used to be the “laziest person ever”! After losing over 70 pounds, she was inspired to become a personal trainer and now lives a fit lifestyle. Please read on for more about Lorraine and her birthday bikini goal!
Q: Have you always been fit? What inspired you to live a fit lifestyle?
No, it wasn’t until after the birth of my second child at age 32 that I decided it was time to get myself together. Before having my kids I was the laziest person ever. I even smoked cigarettes. After gaining 40 pounds with each child, I got tired of looking and feeling frumpy. I slowly began walking, then running and fell in love with strength training. My husband also inspired me. During my last pregnancy he started working out and lost an amazing 60 pounds. He was getting leaner and sexier, while I was blowing up. Once I got going I lost nearly 70 pounds myself and became a certified personal trainer with AFAA (Aerobics and Fitness Association of America).
Q: What advice do you have for moms who claim they don’t have time for exercise?
You have to MAKE the time. Incorporate working out into your schedule like your life depends on it – because it does. You wouldn’t not eat, take a shower, brush your teeth or go to work everyday; well, working out should be apart of your regular routine just like those things. And, don’t let your baby be your excuse. I used to put mine in her swing and stand in the middle of the kitchen doing squats and dumbbell raises. You don’t have to go to the gym to get your workout on. You just have to want to do it.
Q: What is your favorite exercise and why?
I love most upper body exercises – dips, dumbbell kickbacks, shoulder raises – because I love to see the definition in my arms and shoulders. My legs are a work in progress, but I also love stiff leg dead lifts. They just feel good
.
Q: Are you more of a cardio mommy or strength training mommy?
Definitely strength training, but I love to run. I do the Peachtree Road Race every year; and two years after my daughter was born I did my first half-marathon.
Q: Do you have any mental tricks that you use when you just don’t feel like working out?
I try and remember how good I feel once I’m working out and after. Once I’ve got a good schedule going I’m pretty consistent, but when I’ve been a little lax (yes, it happens to everyone) it’s harder to get back into the groove. Set goals and post them on the refrigerator or your bathroom mirror. Think of them – and your rewards – when times get hard to help push you through. My current goal is to wear a bikini on my 38th birthday – in two months!
Q: Random question: If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go? (and would you bring your kids?)
I just did a cruise through the Mediterranean which was awesome. It made me want to see the Greek Isles. I like traveling with my children but this trip would be strictly for me and my husband.

This picture is worth a thousand words: Lorraine gave herself a gold medal as a reward for losing 10 lbs over the summer. What a great idea!
Thank you Lorraine for being an inspiration to moms everywhere!

I like the idea of rewarding yourself when you reach a goal. I never thought of a gold medal though. Good Idea!
