After almost a 4 month hiatus from running (thanks to Hallux Rigidus surgery) I decided to jump back on the treadmill the other night and give it a go.
Here is what I learned:
1. Running is HARD! It takes your breath away very quickly and challenges almost every muscle in your body.
2. Running takes determination, especially on a treadmill. There were no pretty trees, singing birds, or gorgeous mountains to help distract my mind. It was me, my Ipod, and a blank wall. Focus, focus, focus!
3. Running is a stress reliever. Being around two small boys all day long is emotionally exhausting. Running gives me the mental release that helps me stay (somewhat) sane.
4. Running is humbling. Five years ago I ran a half marathon in 1:38. Today I struggle with a 10 minute mile. I have to start over just like everyone else, but I WILL to keep on trying.
5. Running makes me happy. ![]()

Running is so hard.
There’s no doubt that some people find it easier than others. However, there’s much truth in the saying, ‘no pain, no gain’.

I’m not a runner but am definitely interested in working my way to being one. Do you have any tips for people who haven’t ran since they were made to in PE?

Lisa..that is such great news!!! Congrats! How is the toe feeling? Mine is getting better – I’m in Physical Therapy. I’ve been spinning and doing the elliptical..it’s been about two months. I’m thinking I will be back at my step class in a couple of weeks. Not sure when I will be able to start running tho. Hoping in a month. Let me know how you are feeling. Mine still hurts after working out.

That is great news Lisa! I am happy for you. I know what it feels like to not be able to workout when your body really craves it after an injury. I am sure after some more practice with running, you will be back to your old self.

I found Web site doing searches on hallux rigidus surgery and recovery. You and I have an awful lot in common, including a certain big toe problem. I was told I needed this surgery a year ago. I waited…hoping it would go away. Flip flops and bare feet (I work from home) temporarily masked the soreness. Now it’s winter, it’s sore, I got a 2nd opinion and it’s the same as the first. I need the surgery. I am freaking out. I am a single mom of 3 kids and I am very fit and prefer it that way! Are you glad you had the surgery? After all is said and done and you are running again, was it the right decision? I am worried about being able to work (I am a writer) and taking carer of my kids. How long are you supposed to keep the foot elevated? If you have time, please write back. I need a non-dr opinion from someone like me who.

Yay! I’m so glad you are back on your feet, Lisa!! (Both of them!) Running has taught me a lot but most of all I’m going to echo you and say “humility”!

i have learned that it is not how fast but that you finish. it still feels good to finish in 10.30 min/miles versus 8.40 min/miles.

Am not a mommy but I deeply respect the challenges of making a come back to running and fitness.
With the fitness level you achieved prior to having your kids, you’ll return to a higher level sooner than most of us. Be patient and you’ll amaze yourself!
Keep up the great work!

As usual, I am *so* right there with you! It’s HARD to get back into it, and so humbling. But just getting out there (or even on a treadmill) and doing it… it makes me happy, too. You go, girl.

Lisa – That’s fantastic news that you could run! How did it feel?
For me, it’s been incredibly challenging – since I’ve only been doing it for 2 years this month! I don’t always love it, and get so bored on the treadmill but don’t like running when it’s super cold. But I feel amazing when I’m done and mentally it helps me unwind. I hate the elliptical and would rather be on the dreadmill, but I have grown to really enjoy running outside. (Don’t knock the 10 minute mile either…)

Thanks for sharing this! I love that you’re not afraid to be “real” and to show that staying fit isn’t always easy.
I know it will probably take me awhile to get back into running after baby #2, but I guess that’s just the way it is after “taking a break.” At first, I’ll probably be huffing and puffing. But hopefully I’ll be back participating in 5Ks in no time.
