We buy A LOT of batteries each month. I usually buy Energizer, because I’ve always figured they were the best. They also happen to be the most expensive.
Well, I was wrong.
I got the chance recently to be an official ‘toy tester’ to help determine exactly which brand gives you more bang for your buck. I received three fun toys (Night Vision Goggles, Home Depot Drill and The Grand Central Station Geo Trax Train Set) and tested them with Duracell, Rayovac, and Energizer batteries.
The testing involved using the toys for hours (not tough to do with two small kids!) and determining the point at which the toys “died”. I did this for all 3 brands of batteries and guess what?
Rayovac lasted just as long (even longer on some toys) as Duracell and Energizer. Rayovac batteries are considerably cheaper than the others, so they are the far better deal.
To calculate the best value for your money, I divided the average price (according to Nielsen Data) of each battery brand by the amount of time each battery lasted in the toy.
Here are my results:
Energizer AA (avg price: .89 per battery) 13 hrs = .07 per hour
Energizer AAA (avg price: .916 per battery): 6.5 hrs= .14 per hour
Duracell AA (avg. price .944 per battery): 12.50 hrs=.08 per hour
Duracell AAA (avg. price: .936 per battery) 6 hrs= .16 per hour
Rayovac AA (avg. price: .561 per battery): 12.75 hrs=.04 per hour
Rayovac AAA (avg. price: .605 per battery): 6.25 hrs=.10 per hour
As you can see, Rayovac is the better choice. Next time, that is what I will be choosing.
Now, how are YOUR batteries doing? Have you re-charged them with a solid workout today? If not, get up and get moving gang! Never underestimate the power of a workout.

The best value is rechargeables. You can get 4 batteries plus a recharger for less than $20 on Amazon, and they are good for thousands of recharges. The newer ones (I have Sony) recharge in less than three hours. Also, you know, better for the environment and all.
Hi Lisa,
As I sit here and listen to the hum of a couple of remote controlled cars in the background…I’m thinking this very excellent information for me! (as in: we go through a lot of batteries too!). Thanks much!

hmmm…never gave much thought to batteries
but thanks for the heads up! We go through a lot in this house with kids toys! My batteries are great today. Got my work out in and ate very healthy! Didn’t let the pineapple upside down cake take me down!

Ooh! Thanks for testing that out for us! It had never occurred to me that there would even be a difference.
