Dr. Oz on Oprah’s Best Life Week

by workoutmommy on January 7, 2009

Oprah is kicking off the new year with her Best Life Series.  Even if you are not an Oprah fan, you should watch these episodes because there is a lot of great information for everyone.

drozYesterday’s episode featured Dr. Oz (my favorite) and he shared a great tip when reading nutrition labels.
Get out a piece of paper and write down the 5 ingredients that you should AVOID:

  1. High Fructose Corn Syrup
  2. Sugar
  3. “Enriched” anything
  4. Trans-fats/Hydrogenated fats
  5. Saturated fat

Take it with you when you go grocery shopping and do your best to buy foods that contain none of these.  It will be a serious challenge, I promise.

Dr. Oz summed it up best by advising us to:

“only consume foods that have no labels”

That right there was an “AHA!” moment for me!

How about you?  If you have been watching, what has been your favorite tip(s) so far?

Mizfit: Diet pepsi from the fountain has no label, right? :)
No white stuff is tough! Gonna try though!

I gotta say that these tips aren’t gonna work for regular folks. Fruits have sugar. No saturated fat = no meat. Maybe limit intake to xx grams is better choice.

The advice above is very true. Eating food that has been processed the least is generally the way to go. Food that comes in a bag, box, or wrapper should be avoided, when possible. It’s always better to eat an Apple over a Candy Bar.

I like that idea too.. consume foods without any labels. That is really tough! I’m going to note those in my iPhone and see if I can do it, haha.

I love Dr. Oz! I learned that there are omega-3s in squash and tofu. Talk about random but awesome! :)

Too bad I missed it. “only consume foods that have no labels” – very catchy!

Thank you for sharing the list with everyone. It is so difficult to find foods which do not contain any of the above ingredients. Lots of fruit and veggies is the best bet!!!

Interesting. I’ll have to remember the “BIG 5″ when I’m grocery shopping.

As it is, I do try to purchase and consume as many “foods without labels” as I can.

We also don’t eat out much…in part because I like to know what ingredients are in my food.
