Runner’s World considers HER plus-sized?

by workoutmommy on December 17, 2008

This is a picture from an article in the latest issue of Runner’s World.  I kind of glossed over the page until I got to the words  “Plus Size Women”.

Am I missing something here?  Is she really a plus-size model and I just don’t see it?

Come on, Lisa – don’t you know that any female with breasts is automatically plus-sized in media land???

Are people now plus size if they’ve got a healthy BMI? Does regular size mean we have to have no curves and not be healthy? Good Lord.

I read somewhere that most plus size models are size 10-14. Isn’t that the average woman?

I suppose that model could be a size 10. Hard to say. She looks great.

Do you think they mean plus size by height? She looks pretty tall but not fat at all. You should send them this post and get their response.

if she’s plus-size, what am I?

In a culture where size 2 is considered fat, I guess this woman is obese.
Wish I were that fat.

the ‘larger man’ was also not so large, I didn’t think. Also, if she’s plus sized, then I must be, too. I’d be more supportive if they offered some attractive sports bra options for the ‘plus-sized chest’….but my guess is that MAXIMUM that model wears size medium pants…..and that if she isn’t layered all wonky (leggings, skirt, long shirt) to make her look thicker, she’s actually quite thin. I was considering writing a letter to RW to express my displeasure.

That is crazy! She is most certainly not plus size! I’ve noticed that a lot of catalogs do the whole “plus size” clothing section with thin women as models…

Well the cothes aren’t fair at all n we can’t see her height but goodness plus size looks like normal n way healthier than eating cotton to stay thin.eeks!!!

I understand the model issue, but I am glad that a few companies are actually making these clothes, they just are hard to find. It used to be that you wore an XL white T-shirt to work out.

didn’t you know if your chest is larger than a B cup you’re considered plus size! I’m DD and always looked upon as ‘big’… I don’t get it :(

OH, for sure RW will get some letters over this. In triathlete terms this model would be considered an “Athena” and the male equivalent a “Clydesdale”–sometimes races offer prizes in these categories, which is based on weight not clothes size, so tall people often qualify–the argument being “big” people (which is not to say fat) shouldn’t have to compete against the teeny tiny athletes. Don’t get me wrong–there are some seriously fast Athenas and Clydesdales out there. All this to say I’d never call her plus size. In fact after all my drivel about Athenas, she doesn’t even look like an Athena. She looks like she has a great rack, svelte legs and a really bad stylist!

Rachel: y’know, I never thought of it that way. I’ll have to figure out where to send it to see if they have an “official” response. :)

Things like this just make me want to punch someone. (But I don’t, I just want to.) She’s definitely a 10 or 12 at most. Ugh.

They want the women smaller and the men bigger.

Due to this holiday season, I am starting to qualify!

I think plus sized is considered 12, but probably 10 now a days. She can’t be bigger then a 10 no way.
