Yet another reason to always take the stairs

by workoutmommy on December 15, 2008

If you are someone who normally takes the elevator, here is a new reason why you should always take the stairs.

You could get stuck in there for over 45 minutes and need firemen to pry you out!

This happened to me yesterday morning! The irony is that I got stuck in there after working out in the hotel fitness center. I should have kept my fitness momentum going and hiked it up the twelve flights of stairs. For some reason though, hotel stairs always freak me out, so I stick with elevators.

Never again. First, I must say that the hotel staff was excellent and made sure to keep me calm during the entire event. I was still terrified though as I had no idea where the elevator had gotten stuck and I ran every “death in an elevator movie-scene” through my head. At one point, I was convinced I was going to plummet to my death!

Fortunately, that did not happen. This nice firemen arrived and rescued me by prying open the doors (of the broken elevator behind us) and made me jump down to the next floor. I survived, although I definitely look a little worse for the wear in this picture. (it was the lighting?)

When the staff offered me the next available (working) elevator, I politely declined. At that point, 12 flights of hotel stairs did not seem so scary anymore. Going forward, it’s only stairs for me!

So the next time you stop to press that up button, think again.
Don’t get stuck, get fit instead. :)

I love this story Lisa (well, not the fact that you were stuck…) – the idea that, here’s another reason for taking the stairs! So you don’t get stuck!! So, in this case, stairs not only give you a good workout, they also save you from one of those movie scenes (which I would have recalled too, had I been in your shoes…)!

Oh I feel for you Lisa!
I hate elevators for that exact reason…getting stuck and/or plummeting LOL
so I always take the stairs!
Glad you survived.

12 flights of stairs! I’m still taking the elevator. haha
I’ve been stuck on the elevator no less than 5 times at work. I also had an elevator free-fall for 4 floors before the brakes kicked in. That sucked !
Always nice to have a new person stop by.

I am glad you are okay. I wonder why the elevator was not working. Lack of maintenance?

You crack me up. Love the photo =)

That’s part of why I chose to live on the 3rd floor. It adds more exercise to my every day life that I wouldn’t get on the main level. Especially when carrying 20lb baby, or both kids equaling over 50lbs. Feel the burn =)

Sounds like something from the movies! Elevators definitely scare me a little – especially those ones at the Westin in SF (BlogHer).

Stairs are great, but be careful of empty stairs in public places – they can be a prime place for an attack on an unsuspecting female. Make a buddy do the stairs with you!
