Mommy and me ellipticals

by workoutmommy on November 25, 2008

My least favorite piece of fitness equipment is the elliptical. Since I am still dealing with my injured foot, I have been spending a lot of time on ellipticals and have started to dread working out.

Spending 30-40 minutes on this boring machine is complete torture. My mind wanders, I get easily irritated by those around me (especially the ones running on the treadmills!) and end up wishing the minutes away. Sometimes, with the help of a good magazine or TV show, I can occupy my mind long enough to get a fairly decent workout.

So when I saw this picture, I literally laughed out loud!

Is this for real? Is a toddler/small child really going to find this thing FUN? What happened to just good old fashioned playing?

What do you think, do kids really need adult style fitness equipment? and while I have your attention, what is your least favorite piece of exercise equipment?

I do not agree. Now, I do love that my kids pretend to be me and when they find a headband will say “Bye Mommy, I’m going running like you” and it’s a clear indication to me that I am setting a healthy example for them, but that’s all they need. How about ditching kiddie exercise equipment and letting kids run around — get rid of all of the motorized toys and let them run and play and get tired (dare I say they old fashioned way)!

I hope that foot feels better soon Lisa! I cannot agree with you more about the boredom of the Elliptical. I actually much prefer the dreadmill to the Elliptical.

Gotta completely agree with Frannie.

When I was little I remember doing aerobics with my mum (she’d wake up early to do them on the tv), and to me it was just fun and silly, and she fully supported my dancing around… it was just a game. But I also spent a LOT of my time running around with just my imagination to play with- so I think in that kind of circumstance its all good.

I don’t think kids need adult style fitness equipment. Just another way to try and make more $.

My favorite thing to do at the gym is the Elliptical, my least favorite would probably be the stair master.

Fitness equipment for children is just silly! Personally, I’d rather not have to use fitness equipment either. I wish I could run outside everyday! But alas, that’s not always realistic.

My least favorite piece of exercise equipment is the treadmill. I’m not sure why…maybe it’s because if I’m physically able to run then I just want to be outside.

My kid would last as long as his attention span. Like a minute and he’d be done with it.

You don’t like the elliptical? What? I love it because there’s no impact and I get a great workout! And I just watch TV while I’m on it. I guess it takes all kinds, right?

But no, kids definitely don’t need them.

Don’t really have a least favorite piece of equipment, but my least favorite exercise EVER is the EVIL BURPEE! AAAAAARRRRGGGHHHH! Hate those things!

You are right, that is Laugh out loud funny! As long as kids aren’t in front of the TV or video games, they are probably getting enough fun activity. We don’t watch TV during the day, so instead they are riding their bikes, roller blading, playing ball, getting plenty of SUN!! They need Vitamin D and can’t get it on a kid sized eliptical.

I have to say exercise equipment for children can be useful… just don’t expect them to get any kind of real workout using it. If the equipment is used to play at being a grownup, like those pretend bake-stove things, why not? Let’s pretend.
I hope no one seriously tries to force a child to endure the drudgery of /having/ to workout when they don’t wanna. (Let’s save that until puberty, eh?)
Sadly, my least favorite piece of exercise equipment right now is my running shoes. Don’ wanna run. Is it okay if I go play instead? Can I, huh? Huh?

My least favorite exercise is any that involves a machine. I prefer group fitness classes or anything outdoors.

That mini-elliptical makes me laugh. My Mom has an elliptical set up in her living room, and every grandkid loves to play on it!

I also think that the mini- machines are silly. But then, I hate most workout equipment, lol! Except for spinning bikes, pilates reformers, and weights.
But I’m with you; the elliptical is the WORST.

Totally agree!Just another way to try to take our $$$’s and make us feel guilty. Let ‘em run around in the fresh air and do the things that kids are supposed to do. Trouble is, everyone is so paranoid these days that kids don’t even get to play outside or walk to school any more. So maybe there is a place for this kind of stuff??

Whenever I get on an elliptical, time flows backwards, I swear. I shall buy this kid elliptical to my naughty child instead of coal this year. Have you tried rowing? Water jogging?

I think in a modeling-parents-creative-play sort of way, it’s not so evil, “let’s play go to the gym!” But if it’s really being used for exercise? As in, my kids a little pudgy I think I’ll buy this for her? Yuck.

Have I mentioned how much I despise being on the elliptical, because they bore me to tears? 10-15 minutes is usually my max before I decide it’s either stay on the machine or stab my eyes out. :)
