Thanks to my two kids, my dog now suffers from an extreme case of “neglected dog syndrome”. His daily walks have morphed into weekly (or semi-weekly), yet even at the ripe old age of 12, he is perched and ready to go when it is finally his turn for exercise.

He is an old dog, but still knows his stuff when it comes to exercise. Here are a few thoughts he would like to share with you:

  1. Going for a walk is a privilege. Always greet the opportunity with a smile (and a wagging tail).
  2. Hydrate! When he hears the leash, he knows to hit the water bowl in anticipation of a workout.
  3. Rain/snow/sleet/wind is not an excuse. See number #1 again.
  4. Stretch! Always stretch out the legs before and after a good workout. It helps keep our joints healthy and judging by the sound he makes during the stretch, it feels pretty darn good too.
  5. Greet other walkers/runners/bikers with a friendly hello. Be happy! (see #1 again)
  6. Don’t overdo it. Know when to call it a day or take a break under a shady tree.
  7. Always take a long nap after a tough workout. (Ok, so maybe we don’t all get the luxury of this one, but if you get the chance, take it!)

Do your pets have any fitness tips to share with us?

    trite?
yes but TRUE if you live here with an 150 pound bulmastiff:

toot your flatulence away and then lollop out of the room leaving others to suffer :)

it’s fitness because A. he walks and 2. he feels fitterbetter after methinks.
    :)

LOL! This was awesome. I don’t have any pets, just children but they have a tip to contribute: you don’t need equipment to work out. Take advantage of any available surface to do some jumps, flying leaps, lifting to look under etc. Just don’t call it plyometrics. It’s called “Bad Man” and “Shooter Guy” (I swear we don’t buy our kids guns).

LOVE IT!! Tips from the dog :) Ahh…such wisdom in the morning!

No pet to walk yet but when our own 4 little pets are just a bit older and life isn’t so messy…we plan on getting a family dog. I can’t wait! I always had dogs growing up :)

Thanks, Fido! Hope you get your walk today~

mizfit: lol! my dog does that too but forgets to get up and leave the room. He just looks around and I think he tries to blame it on the kids!

I LOVE this post! My dog might add: “Be in the moment. There’s ALWAYS something to be excited about.”

Oh, and do intervals (aka lunges after squirrels when you can).

No dog here. But most evenings, my husband walks his wife. :D That’s right - the two of us walk around greeting neighbors who are walking their dog. This is only a recent development, but certainly something I enjoy.

My super cool cat would like to add, “Make exercise time fun - like maybe just chase anything that rolls across the house.” And she’s definitely in with your dog on the naps. Oh, and when we go on walks, she’s not the best example - yes, she rides in a cat stroller! :)

Our dog, who is 10, would like to add that patience is a virtue. If you can’t get out at the exact time you want, be patient and then get outside as soon as you can. (Sitting by the door and giving your walking companions pointed looks also helps.)

And if people outside want to pet you, let them. They will give you lots of love and compliments.

My dog taught me that you’re never too old to play.

Oh, and also to turn around three times before you lie down, but frankly I’ve never found that tip very useful.

    My dog is a puppy….

1- Goes NUTS whenever he sees the leash, man, this little guy is excited about exercise!
2- Runs whenever presented with an uphill trail.
3- Always rehydrates after a workout.
4- Sleeps when tired, eats when hungry.
5- Snow, sprinkles, the local pond, grass everything is an excuse for fun.
6- Always engages other dogs into games, running games…

I guess there is a lot to learn from our dogs… Now my cat on the other hand…

1- acts snooty ALL THE TIME
2- Asks to go outside and then turns her nose cause ya know, the weather is slightly humid
3- Sleeps most of the day, if not all day…
4- every so often, will go after a bug and be the most graceful, supple, coordinated creature ever.
