Do you ever have one of those days weeks when you feel like no matter what you do, you will never get your to-do list finished?

There are mouths to feed, dogs to walk, laundry to be done, bills to be paid, groceries to be shopped for, clothes to be purchased, school supplies are needed, and oh yeah, don’t forget to bathe and brush your own teeth and hair. (funny how that one always comes last, isn’t it?)

I’m having one of those weeks and as much I need to focus on what needs to get done, I still need to exercise. That is what makes me feel energized. It gives me patience. It trumps almost everything else on that list. Once my workout is done, I can come back and start tackling my chores. So I am heading outside today to get some much needed exercise. For the next 45 minutes, it is all about me and my bike!

How about you? What is looming on your to-do list today? Can it wait awhile so that you can get some exercise? Yes!

Here is some extra incentive. I have a brand new BPA-free CamelBak water bottle to give away. Enter the contest by leaving me a comment and tell me which chore you are NOT going to do today so that you can exercise instead. Impress me with your creativity!

Get up and get moving gang! No excuses!

Details: The contest will run until 10pm EST Friday, August 15th. Winner must have a US mailing address.

My advice is to file to-do list bankruptcy. Lists stress me out, make me feel like I’m on a sinking ship. I wrote an article about balancing work/family/fitness and one of my expert sources talked about “triaging your day.” I really liked that approach–just taking a few minutes each morning to figure out what MUST get done. These musts are usually tied to your priorities, and for most of us, that includes fitness, so that means a workout! And best of all, you don’t put anything on a to-do list that can’t get done (or fit in your head). That’s my limiter. I have to be able to remember what I need to do and my head is sorely short on space. My friend Darcy wrote about her to-do list in her last post and it totally cracked me up. Thought it might be relevant for some of you (http://darcyfranklin.blogspot.com/).

  3. Jamie Says:

I’m not going to vaccum up all that nasty dog hair on my carpets so I can get on the elliptical (all the while, I’ll be thinking about how I could be doing lunges and squats with my favorite walking buddie, hehe)…I’m still sore by the way!

  4. Kathie Says:

What chore do I plan to put on the back-burner today so that I can get in my exercise, you ask? That’s a bit of a toughie since my list is also a mile long (aren’t they all? LOL). Let’s see, today I have to feed the family, walk the dog, wash/fold/putaway two loads of laundry, mop the bathroom floor, vacuum the first floor of the house, give the baby a bath - all to be done after my 7-4:30PM job. Ugh! Today, I plan to NOT wash/fold/putaway those two loads of laundry sitting there on the floor that are calling my name so that I CAN get in some EXERCISE time on my TREADMILL! “I’m sorry Sir Laundry Pile 1 and Le Laundry Pile 2 but you will be sitting there for one more day. I have exercise ME time to tend to today and that takes predence over you. You are not the top priority today. I will get to you tomorrow.” :)

  5. Lance Says:

OK, so I can’t pick “take out the trash” since I did that already - dang it!

It’s got to be something I would do tonight. I won’t wash the dishes (at least not right away). How’s that for creative (lacking, I know). Then I’ll get outside and do something. Maybe basketball, or a run.

Exercise energizes me too. I need to remember that more often, and make it more of a priority…

  6. Misty Says:

Hmm, I would avoid cleaning off my desk to exercise. I can tell I’ve been doing that a little too much recently since my free space around the keyboard is steadily shrinking!

  7. Mark Salinas Says:

Chores are endless! I am going to skip the taxi rides for my kids to their friends today so we can ride our bikes as a family! :)

Hmmm…which one to pick? I will skip washing the laundry in order to exercise on the elliptical.

  9. WeightingGame Says:

today I shall not do aNY chores because, quite luxuriously, we have a cleaning service coming Friday in preparation for a Friday night dinner party. Which, I’m assuming, will dirty up the place enough to necessitate some Saturday morning chores :-)

Such a timely post for me! I spent so much of last week CHORING (?!?) that I barely exercised. This post? Inspiring me to put the exercise first.

So, today I will not run errands (grocery store, post office, library…) because they can all wait until tomorrow!

  15. Alice Says:

Oh yeah, super long list here too. Who doesn’t have one like that… I think nothing beats doing your workout in the morning before anyone wakes up. For me too, working out helps me feel same, healthy and somehow everything else seems easier.

  16. Cindy Says:

I am the master of avoiding chores. Exercise is much more fun and rewarding. So today, we’ll go to the Y and I’ll not wait until the kiddo’s remove all the stuffed animals they’ve placed on the stairs with blankets (so that they can sleep).

Yep, the stair case will just have to wait until my return from work this evening.

Oh, and the two baskets of laundry up in the room that need folding, and the upper bathroom that needs cleaning, and the papers that need organizing….Oh, my.

    Please no unexpected visitors!!!

  17. FatFighter Says:

I am definitely NOT going to unpack my bag from my weekend trip. I also doubt I will do laundry or clean the litter box - ewwww! Maybe I better not skip that one…

  18. syd Says:

Are you reading my mind AGAIN!? How about I will not change the baby’s diapers today? Just kidding. :)

This morning, I forewent my shower to take a stroller jog before daycare drop-off. Hopefully I’ll still squeeze in a shower sometime later today…

  19. Angie Says:

I’m planning to skip all chores today. I’ll go to Turbo Kick class tonight though so I’ll probably have some energy when I get home to maybe do the dishes that are sitting in the sink ha ha.

What a great idea to skip something and get a dose of reality back by exercising. I think I’ll skip making the list in the first place. Depending on one’s perspective, I’ll either be all done of not started.

  22. workoutmommy Says:

choring? LOL! what a great new word!

  27. Juicebox.mom Says:

Skipping chores…. no problem, have done that all weekend! Today I will skip getting a haircut so I can go to the gym during my daughters soccer practice.

  30. Lauren Brooks Says:

Much rather exercise than empty the dishwasher!

I guess I’ll put off unpacking from my vacation that I just got home from to give me the 30 minutes of exercise I need to do now. I hate looking at a full suitcase but with such limited time I guess that could wait!

I wish chores were my reason for not working out … but really it’s having two toddlers tied to my legs all day, every day.

That said, I could work out during their nap this week. So, instead of bargain shopping to save money this week at that time, I’ll workout instead. Good plan! Thanks.

  33. Alicia Says:

My chore that didn’t get done was weeding and outside work. You got to get that done either early in the morning or later in the evening when it is cool. Unfortunately, that is when I like to go running! Oh well, I’d rather go running anyway.

  34. Meredith Says:

i really need to mop the kitchen floor, but i’d much prefer to hop on my spin bike!

  35. LosingIrene Says:

As a STAH to one and a full-time college student I have to admit, I have lots of time. Except when my daughter is awake. Then there is no time for me. It’s all about her. But I do make sure to make time for working out. I don’t feel accomplished throughout my day until I have spent 30 minutes sweating like a pig.

My daughter started pre-school about 6 weeks ago and since she’s started I’ve made her lunches, every. single. time. I think I’ll skip that one and tell The Husband he has to start doing them a couple days a week. That way, it’s not only today I can skip it but will be able to skip 1/2 the days, won’t THAT be nice?!

  37. Paul Eilers Says:

With our active Little Man now 16 months old, out house would be a complete DISASTER if we didn’t clean up every day.

My wife and I are the types to make the bed every morning. We also have to wash all the dishes at night - or we can’t hardly go to bed!

And since we have a black Lab, we sweep the floor once a day and usually mop it too.

But most of all, Brady’s toys are in a Pack & Play in the living room. He gets most of them out throughout the day, to the point where it is hard to walk in there. So we clean that up too.

We have a motto around here. We say, “If everybody does a little bit, then no one has to do it all.” That is the key. Since every family member pitches in, under the threat of torture if they don’t, then our house manages to look decent, even if we do have a “Toddler Tornado.”

  38. Doris Says:

I had to take the 19 year old to the dentist today so I made sure I hit the early morning pilates class. It helped me deal with the stress of telling my “adult” child that he needs braces.

I have started to leave my list undone and do for myself. I’m in my 4th week of walking and eating right (trying to lose 20 lbs). I was never getting my to do list done before when I wasn’t working out so I have decided to make the time to just do it and what’s undone I can try to work on a little tomorrow….it’ll still be there!

  44. DaDivaStreet Says:

I’m not going to take the laundry out of the dryer & leave it in the dryer basket today! Not folding or putting away! My two kitties will do a fantastic job of keeping it warm & pressed!
