Thank you, thank you, thank you! If I had a quarter for every time a woman said she didn't want to lift weights because she'd didn't want to be bulky, I'd be able to quit my day job.

Seriously, is there a way for every woman in America to read this? lol.

I agree whole-heartedly with all of this. About four years ago, I began to workout as a way to go from fat to fit. I started with primarily cardio, and, while I lost a lot of weight, much of it was muscle. I went from overweight and fat to underweight and still fat. Then I discovered free weights. They have been the best thing in my arsenal of fitness (minus maybe my improved nutrition). Anyway, most of this stuff also applies to guys as well (except the testosterone thing, and gaining more muscle). Nice piece.

Having played football in college, I've always believed that lifting weights is good for you.

I see a lot of people who walk and do other non-resistant exercises, and their body shape never changes.

They may be in good shape, but they still have a bit of a belly, or their legs are chubby, etc.

Resistant exercises, especially lifting weights, can change all of that. And you only need to do it 2-3 times per week.

great tips ;) I haven't stared using regular weights in my workouts yet. I am doing Walk away the Pounds for most of my aerobic and it includes using light weighted balls. I also use the You on a Workout strength training dvd 3 times a week that works your core and uses your body as the gym. I am still on the beginning level but I think I may be able to move up a level in a couple weeks. Have you tried that one.....and if so, do you think it's a good one to start with or should I do more weights? I am new to all of this.....I also have a lot of weight to lose---have lost 42 lbs since the end of April.

Thanks for this workout routine! And I never knew that about the lower reps vs higher reps; good to know.
