I normally don’t buy fitness magazines at the grocery store, but Fitness RX caught my attention. Not only is Jackie Warner on the cover but inside she details a boot camp workout that involves a kettlebell! Her 20 minute workout is going to “transform my body into a fat burning machine” , so I figured that has got to be worth the $4.99, right?
The circuit was very tough and included many of my favorites such as jump lunges, mountain climbers, push ups and planks. Add in the planks with tricep kickbacks and abs using a kettlebell and I was definitely burning. I could not do the donkey kicks with my kettlebell hooked onto my foot and would love to see someone actually do that. (since I almost put a hole in my floor when the kettlebell dropped off my foot!)
Jackie recommends that you do this workout in deep sand, which definitely would make it very difficult. Since I do not live near any sand, I did the workout in my family room and it was still very intense.
Jackie also has released a new DVD, Workout: One-On-One Training with Jackie, has anyone tried it out? I wonder if any of these moves are on there?
The accompanying article includes Jackie’s top fitness tips for 2008.
Some of them make a lot of sense such as:
#1: Be a smart consumer and read food labels carefully.
#2: No over complicated routines/no over complicated diets.
#3: Never skip meals
#5: Sugar is the devil
#11: Eat natural foods
#12: Don’t be afraid to lift weights
Yet some of them seem to contradict each other:
#6: Clean house: remove all junk from your kitchen
#7: Deprivation does not work.
#9: Eat the good, the bad, then the ugly. Good=veggies/fruit/lean meat. Bad=starches/bread, Ugly=dessert/alcohol. Fill up on the good first.
and then some I just don’t agree with:
#10 Water helps you lose weight. Three liters per day can burn 50-75 calories and double your energy.
I want to drink some of Jackie’s water if it is doubling her energy!
#13 ONLY do intensity cardio.
No, I can’t agree with that. Not every cardio day needs or should be intense. Jackie says in the article that if you don’t have time for an intense workout, then you should skip it altogether. I definitely believe that some movement/cardio is better than nothing! It’s all about balance.
#8: Crunches are a waste of time.
They may not build a six pack, but when done properly, they do play a role in building a strong core.
Overall, I think it was $5 well spent. I got a great workout and enjoyed many of the articles.
Meanwhile I am waiting for Jackie to give me a call and offer to train me in person. Is that the phone I hear ringing?

it isnt.
jackie is SO bad at returning my calls.
or should I stop calling since I received that cease and desist letter?
who can say.
(I liked the article. but also thought SHE’S GREAT BUT THERE ARE SO MANY GREATS OUT THERE WITH FAR MORE INTRIGUING SUCCESS STORIES. SOME OF IT IS LUCK. thoughts? am I merely snarky?)

I totally agree with you about objecting to the “only do intensity cardio” tip. She’d actually advocate skipping a workout rather than going easier? That’s just silly.
The more I read the more I’m convinced that VARIETY is key. Some days long, some days hard, some days easy. Plus, psychologically, intensity can start becoming something you dread if you do too much of it; but can be invigorating if you mix it up with easier days.

The workout sounds awesome – we’ve been using kettlebells in my Boot Camp class and they can be really intense. I’m with you on the cardio workouts – it’s so much better to get in a few minutes when you can than to not workout at all.

I think I may be going back to the store to buy this magazine!

We included kettlebells in our Boot Camp this morning……we did some trap exercises that were extremely intense! My traps are sore for the first time in my life!

mizfit-thought the same thing! luck. hoping some comes my way too!
fatfighter: what are your favorite kettlebell exercises?
crabby: I’m with you on the variety.
mark: share your trap exercises!
Fascinating! THanks for the summary. Exercising in sand – that’s hardcore. I’d like to try it. And hey, I just got a kettlebell!
Good for your for calling her out on the contradictions.

You know, I am in total agreement with you. I bought the magazine for the same reasons, I thought Jackie’s moves were very challenging (I did not even try some of them, being big bellied right now). BUT (and that goes for the entire magazine) there are some things I totally disagree with. I read the article about getting killer abs yesterday, and honestly, I shook my head in disapproval half the time. No, the abs are not just fast twitch, for goodness sake, they are part of what allows us to have proper posture… slow twitch??? Pfff.
ring ring…it’s me…Leslie. Not Jackie but I must say, I am strangely drawn to her. I read a story a little while ago about how so many straight women have girl crushes on her. Totally agree.
PS I can barely drink three GLASSES of water a day!!
Some of those ARE rather contradictory. I prefer the concept of doing what works well for YOU rather than the strict rigidness of not doing crunches/only doing super intense cardio etc.

Only do high intensity workout? My behind would be only on the couch then. I always thought mixing high and low intensity was better. oh well…
I soooo want some kettleballs!

Hmmm…yea, I’m not so sure I’m a 100 percent believer in Jackie, but if she does what she says it’s obviously working out okay for her. lol.
Does anyone know her fitness certs? She’s one heck of a business women.
leslie–i am running to the phone! do you need me to appear with you on the Today show?
sagan: very well said. the best plan is the one that is working for YOU!
missicat–you are right. mixing high/low is better.
jenn: Here are her certs:
International Sports Science Association (I.S.S.A.), National Endurance and Strength Association (N.E.S.T.A.)
and…she charges $400 per hour! She is definitely one smart business woman!
$400 an hour?! OMG.
Seems like generally good advice. I agree with your criticisms though.

Ok, so I need a kettlebell and the magazine to do the workout, but, other than that, she sounds like she’s got her bases covered.
I’m on the fence about slow cardio. In my marathon plan- every workout has some speed work in it. I think you need to trick your body to teach it to go fast. Also, I’m thinking that you burn more calories with intense workouts.

I also have a straight-girl crush on Jackie, and I like her one-on-one workouts (they had them in our On-Demand section for a while on cable), but I don’t agree with her all-or-nothing take on working out and food. Yes, she looks great, but if you watch her show, her personal life is a bit of a mess. I think balance is key, in life and work.
Also, working out isn’t just about heart rate, BPM, losing weight, etc. A nice walk can clear your head and make you feel better, just as an intense run or spinning class can.
Its funny, sky sport and spa (her gym featured on the show) is literally two blocks from my house, but its the penthouse so i never know this swanky gym existed. As leslie said, i am strangely drawn to her…that straight-gril crush thing is probably useful too when you need a trainer to get you motivated. I think her fitness approach is good, she seems like a no nonsense type of person, but i am not sure about her eating plan…it a bit too low carb for me…

If I considered only a certain intensity level to “count” as a workout, I’d be done for! That said, it’s good to remember to push yourself to the limit once in a while.
For the record, I hate mountain climbers (the exercise, not the people!) with a passion. They always make me feel like I’m going to pass out.
Thanks for the review! I agree with the disagreements — sometimes a low intensity workout is what your mind and body needs!

I just got a 15lb kettlebell, already had some 9lbs ones. Did just some of the basics yesterday and got in a good workout! Wanting to incorporate them more! Still need to learn how NOT to let them hit my wrists..that hurt like a ..owie!

I liked reading your thoughts regarding all the tips. I’m totally with you on the intense cardio and crunches mentality.
Skip a workout entirely because you can’t do it at a high intensity?! That’s nonsense! Moderate and even low intensity workouts can still provide an excellent workout, not to mention decrease stress.

I bought her DVD and it kicked my butt! I am training for a triathlon and do Les Mills Body Pump 1-2x a week, but needed something to do at home with the kids over the summer. I was sore for 4 days after the workout. I say buy it!
