The May issue of Shape magazine has Denise Richards on the cover and inside she tells us:
“working out is part of my life, not just an I-have-to-get-ready-for-a-photo-shoot thing”.
She wants her daughters, ages 2 and 4, to learn by her example of a healthy lifestyle by having them nearby during her daily workouts. Denise goes on to tell Shape:
“I’ll never talk about weight around them, and they’ll never hear me say, ‘Mommy’s feeling fat today’. That kind of attitude just makes young girls grow up to be dissatisfied with their bodies.”
All of this makes for great reading, but I have a hard time believing it. These quotes come from the same woman who posed nude in Playboy six months after the birth of her first child.
Maybe I am old school, but how does posing for Playboy promote a healthy body image message for her children? Yes, mommy had to workout extra hard to get back in shape, but did she have to pose nude to prove her point?
She is also the same actress that is allowing her young children to be filmed as part of her own reality TV show. How can being part of a reality TV show be a good influence for those little girls? They now get to grow up under the media microscope that will no doubt pick apart their every flaw.
Sorry, but I’m just not buying it Denise Richards and right now I’m sorry I bought Shape Magazine!
So, I’m going to channel this frustration into a solid workout.
How about you? What is motivating you to be active today? No excuses!

Amen. I stopped buying most fashion and/or personal magazines long ago, and I’m so glad I did. For me, they’re unmotivating.
Don’t know too much about Denise Richards, but to me, even posing on this cover in that swimsuit sends mixed messages to her daughter. Hmm.
Found your blog via Zen Habits. I like it! I’ll be subscribing after I finish this comment.

you KNOW I thought the same thing…and then hoped I was just a bitter cynic and that she really is doing as she says.
today? my motivation is hubby is turning 40 and he is kind of FREAKING OUT.
I swear that I can not see myself feeling that way when *I* do—–and working out shall help ensure that.

I read that same article last night and thought the *same* thing! Posing for Playboy is not what I would consider being a good role model for you children in terms of body image.
My motivation for today was a little “me” time. Back-to-back-to-back ear infections had disasterous effects on my youngest’s sleep schedule, and consequently on my ability to get up and work out. Since she slept well last night, I got to do something for *me* this morning.

I just got my blog up at Alltop, and was checking out the other mom blogs, and imagine my delight when I found you there too!
Anyway, when I read the headline, I knew I had to check in…
I think we need to take most celebs and their “be-happy-with-you-own-body” message with a pinch of salt. I mean, these are women who have access to a retinue of people who can help them trim their body into any damn shape they choose. I read that J-Lo is calling her post pregnancy fitness team her “120 pound team” because that’s her target weight.
Being fit for a mom shouldn’t have to be about having the kind of body that will land you the Playboy cover - that’s a little unrealistic.

simple mom: welcome and thanks for subscribing!
mizfit: I’m with you and personally, I now think anyone under 85 is young.
slacker: “me” time sounds wonderful! (as does sleep!) Enjoy it because you deserve it!
preschool: that is crazy about Jlo! how about just enjoying your new babies that you wanted for so, so long????
Britni: Thank you for catching my error! I have edited the post to say “Shape” mag instead of Self. That is what I get for posting so late at night.

I like SELF Magazine, but Denise Richards is a freak show. Anyone who makes Charlie Sheen look normal and sane, hello??

I don’t know much about Denise Richards and haven’t read the article, and my train of thought is generally in line with all of you- posing for Playboy isn’t exactly promoting a healthy body image. However, the thought HAS crossed my mind after reading this post that perhaps Denise Richards’ perspective is that she’s comfortable with her body and believes that a womans body is beautiful, and that is the sort of image that she wants to portray. (Or maybe I’m just being naive:)).

Denise Richards is saying the right things, but it seems that what she lives may be sending a different message. After all, nonverbal communication is a lot stronger than verbal!
Time will tell what kind of attitudes her little girls adopt about body image and beauty.

I had the exact same reaction when I saw this article!! The woman will do anything for attention, I think. Of course she’s not going to say to her kids “I diet all the time and you should too you little porkers” but they see her lifestyle and actions speak louder than words. Great post, Lisa!

I don’t think you can be a successful, young actress in L.A.and NOT pass along unhealthy ideas to your kids. It’s just insidious. Look, when you’re in a profession that demands “perfection,” you’re gonna obsess. Kids learn more from what we do than from what we say, and they will grow up in this atmosphere in which their most valuable asset will be their looks. They will grow up in an area where almost EVERYONE looks the same, exercises obsessively, gets plastic surgery, and probably has an eating disorder.
Posing for “Playboy” (which they’re gonna find out about, eventually, one way or another) and posing for a “fitness” magazine in a bikini is NOT teaching your daughters to value their (or others’) intelligence, kindness, or compassion. Or the things that really matter.
April 13th, 2008 at 2:35 pm
I agree, actions speak louder than words, her daughters will see and learn what she values - obviously her appearance. The looks can be changed in an instant, and what do you have left, but an empty shell, no substance as a human being. Someone needs to tell her that posing in Playboy won’t be a positive influence on her children nor others she comes in contact with.
