Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen are back with a new book called You: Staying Young.
They were on Oprah this week with their anti-aging checklist that will help you “get healthy and peel years off your life”. It looks like it has some great information in it, so I am definitely putting this one on my must read list.
Here is a highlight that some of us might really enjoy:
Dr. Oz says we should drink red wine every day
Isn’t that great?!
Of course, it doesn’t mean to drink a bottle per day, but drinking one glass of red wine per day is actually very good for us. The red wine contains resveratrol, a powerful antioxidant that comes from the skins of grapes. This is only the case in red wine, so if you are a white wine fan, you might want to consider switching.
If you do not drink alcohol, you can still get some resveratrol from Concord grape juice or other dark grape juices, but not as much benefit as you would from red wine.
What is an antioxidant and why is it important for us?
Antioxidants are substances, such as vitamin E, vitamin C, or beta carotene, that protect body cells from the damaging effects of oxidation.
On the show, Dr. Oz compares apples to give the best explanation I have ever heard about why antioxidants are important to us:
“one half of this apple was sprinkled with lemon juice and the other was not. While the lemony half remains new and crisp-looking, the untreated half becomes brown and shriveled because of exposure to oxygen, also called oxidation. “The same thing happens to our skin, to our heart, to our eyes,” Dr. Oz says. “All of our bodies need to have the antioxidants.”
As their name implies, antioxidants do to your body what the lemon juice does to an apple—help prevent the damage caused by oxygen exposure.
So load up on your antioxidants!
I’m heading to the grocery store now to stock my house with antioxidant rich foods like sweet potatoes, broccoli, blueberries, tomatoes, and of course….red wine!
Don’t forget to be active today! (and preferably before your red wine)

Regular skin care products are not equipped to treat genital warts or your acne treatment. Just like there is no laser hair removal remedy.

Thanks for visiting my blog.
I added you to my feed reader. You’re nifty. I’m almost looking forward to weaning my daughter, just so I can drink some liquid antioxidant in the evenings. Lol. Here’s my question. If you can get the same benefit from concord grape juice, does that mean that drinking that kind of fruit juice is worth it? I was always taught that fruit juices are evil, second only to lard, in terms of people who are trying to lose weight. (I almost appreciate urinary tract infections just so I can drink cranberry juice without guilt.)

Resveratrol Supplements can help you control your weight naturally
by increasing energy, reducing cravings, and limiting your appetite.
According to Wikipedia, Consumer Lab, an independent dietary
supplement and over the counter products evaluation organization,
published a report on 13 November 2007 on the popular resveratrol
supplements. The organization reported that there exists a wide range
in quality, dose, and price among the 13 resveratrol products
evaluated. The actual amount of resveratrol contained in the
different brands range from 2.2mg for Revatrol, which claimed to have
400mg of “Red Wine Grape Complex”, to 500mg for Biotivia.com Transmax,
which is consistent with the amount claimed on the product’s label.
Prices per 100mg of resveratrol ranged from less than $.30 for
products made by Biotivia.com, jarrow, and country life, to a high of
$45.27 for the Revatrol brand. None of the products tested were found
to have significant levels of heavy metals or other contaminants.

I knew that sprinkling apples (and avocado!) with lemon juice helped it not turn brown, but I never put two and two together and realized it was because it prevents oxidation. Very interesting! One day, I’ll teach that little factoid to my kids!

Hi Lisa,
Antioxidants are something that I read a lot about because of my Arbonne business. Antioxidants in your skincare products are equally important for good health and skin!
Here is an article I wrote about keeping your skin looking fabulous…

I love Doctor OZ. All his books are really well written and funny. He does a good job of speaking to living healthier in a “real life” scenario. Most health books turn me off because they speak more of “ideal” life situations versus the messy and challenging reality that most of us live in.

Hey Marc,
.30 for 100mg? thats 3.00 for 1000mg… thats alot.
many of the companies here have better prices than that.
http://www.ResveratrolPriceWatch.com
It is a public forum where you can add your own prices as well, and ask questions regarding the current dosage suggestions based on the current resveratrol studies.
I hope this helps you Marc.
