TB Milwaukee asked a great question on my Pop-Tart posting

“What’s a good grab and go alternative that won’t make a mess in the car and the kids will eat? I’d love to hear suggestions.”

Good question TB!

160_drinking_0511221.jpgStretch Island Fruit Company recently sent me samples of their Original Fruit Leathers and I think they might be exactly what you are looking for. They contain 99% real fruit, all natural ingredients, no sugar added, and are the nutritional equivalent to 1/2 serving of whole fruit. All of that wrapped up (literally) in only 45 calories! They come in a 9 different flavors and can easily be packed in your bag, pocket, or car for easy access.

I gave these to my husband to taste test because honestly I have never been a fan of fruity type snacks. (don’t even think to ask me about trading my pudding cup for your fruity snacks!) The husband gave these the thumbs up and told me to add them our grocery list. He travels quite a bit for work and is always on the lookout for a ready to eat snack. These are a great alternative to the terrible treats that he would normally get in the airport.

Of course it is always better to eat fruit instead of a substitute but if you find yourself hungry and fruit-less, these make a great second choice. So head on over to Stretch Island Fruit Company to check these snacks out!

What are your favorite snacks that are grab-n-go yet not loaded with fat and calories?

I’ve tried these fruit leathers - tasty, but not filling or anything. I write from coffee shops a lot and since I can’t be forkng over $10/day for a small sandwich and coffee, I bring LOTS of stuff (kind of embarrassing but whatevs.) A nice trick I like is to emoty two packets of plain oatmeal into a ziplock bag with some craisins and brown sugar…then I just ask for a tall cup of hot water, mix in and instant delish oatmeal. Also, fruit; a bag of frozen edamamae (they defrost in a few hours); Progresso lentil soup with a pull tab tob (I eat it cold - gross, I know, but filling and healthy).

I love these! I usually buy a big box of them at Costco every time I shop there.

    Thanks for bringing this up.

I have gotten my kids away from the pop tarts in the car. We’ve been bringing more dry cereal in baggies and a banana. Seems to be working for the past week.
