I talked with another mom today who told me that she doesn’t exercise during the winter because she doesn’t like the cold! She said that she takes the cold weather months “off” and then starts back up in the spring! I must have looked like a deer in the headlights as she continued to rationalize why her theory makes sense.
(which by the way, it doesn’t!)

I spent the next 15 minutes monopolizing the conversation by telling her about all the different ways she could exercise and keep up her fitness level without even having to go outside. She looked at me as if I have three heads (which by the way, I do not!).

Basically, I think she uses the weather as an excuse to slack off for 3-4 months. I’m not going to sugar coat it, it’s a very lame excuse.

Repeat after me: Just because it is cold outside does not mean we shelve our exercise routine!

There are plenty of alternatives that can be done right in your own house, many of which we have talked about here! We’ve got stairs to run or walk, jump ropes to use, TV workouts, online workouts, lunges, squats, or even just jogging in place. If there is a will, there is a way.

If you are a person who must exercise outside, don’t let the cold weather stop you. Keep your outside workouts on the schedule and just make sure to clothe yourself properly and play it safe. I can relate to this feeling because running on the treadmill just isn’t the same (to me) as running outside, even if it is only 10 degrees. I need the fresh air to clear my mind and refresh my mom battery!

I don’t know if my enthusiastic speech helped my friend change her mind about winter fitness. The next time I am heading outside to workout, I will give her a call and see if she would like to join me. Maybe she just needs that little push out the door!

Now tell me, how do you plan to stay fit this winter?
