Even though it was a blatant advertisement, Jillian Michaels offered up a great tip on The Biggest Loser this week.
Chew sugar-free gum instead of snacking.
The Biggest Loser has teamed up with Wrigley’s Extra and has created the walk and chew gum challenge. It is pretty simple, they are asking you to challenge yourself to walk more steps each day and cut calories by chewing gum (theirs, of course) in place of a high calorie snack. You can sign up at their website and keep track of your miles walked, etc. It’s a neat idea, although not exactly revolutionary: Move more, eat less and you will lose weight!
Chewing gum can also help out when you are cooking and preparing meals. You will not be tempted to take a taste of this or a taste of that. Remember—these small tastes will add up to many extra calories in your day!
Have you ever really noticed how many times you help clean your toddler’s plate? Those uneaten chicken nugget pieces can be very tempting! If your mouth is occupied with a piece of sugar-free gum, you will be less likely to eat up those last bites.
I personally am a big fan of chewing gum, especially during times of stress and when I’m working out. As with everything though, it’s all about moderation. By no means should you be chewing a pack at a time, but a few pieces throughout your day might be the appetite distraction you are looking for.
So the next time you find yourself rummaging through the pantry for a snack–and you aren’t really hungry—try chewing a piece of gum instead. It will help prevent mindless munching and save you unnecessary calories.
Now go be active! No excuses!

Great tip!
I just rediscovered gum recently. However, I’m like a little kid–I end up shoving a bunch of pieces in my mouth all at once.
It’s a real sophisticated look, believe me.

I’ve been telling myself all week that I do not need to clear the toddler’s plates. With two at home, it sure makes for an extra meal. Even a bite here and there adds up. It’s funny that you brought it up here!
