The weather has been gorgeous in my neck of the woods, so I’m taking the kids outside to play while I get fit!
Here are some quick and easy exercises you can do at a typical playground.
Be sure to keep your eye on your form…and on your kids!
- Walking lunges: always a favorite of mine. They can be done literally anywhere! As an added bonus, carry one of your children with you. Need to go to the swings? Let mommy lunge you there!
- Monkey bar pull-ups: You can at least try to do them, right? I’m not quite at the point where I can do them anymore, but I can hang there and make an attempt! Hold the pull up position and count backwards (slowly) from 10! Repeat this at least 3 times.
- Decline push-ups: Toes on the edge of the slide and hands on the ground. Count them out loud and let everyone know how much fun you are having! Do 2 sets of 10.
- Step ups on the bench: Do 20 step-ups on the right leg and then switch to the left leg. Your leg muscles are having a party at this point!
- Tricep dips: same bench, different exercise. Do 3 sets of 15. Breathe in that fresh air!
- Jogging: either in place or do laps around the playground. Have your kids chase you ….or you chase them!
Can you think of any to add?
Don’t limit yourself to just the ones I’ve mentioned, be creative!
The world is your playground!
No excuses today—go be active!

Monkey bars are great to do negative pull-ups on since they have a ladder or platform leading to them. If you have trouble doing full pull-ups, hang from the bar and slowly control your weight down. Negatives are the best way to develop the strength necessary for full pull-ups.
